The 1978 Swedish motorcycle Grand Prix was the eighth round of the 1978 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on 23 July 1978 at Karlskoga Motorstadion. Karlskoga Motorstadion
Karlskoga Motorstadion, also known as Gelleråsen Arena, is the oldest permanent motorsport race track in Sweden. The circuit is located north of Karlskoga. The layout is such that the whole track can be seen from all spectator areas. It is currently authorised for European Championship rounds of road racing and Swedish Touring Car Championship events. History Built in 1949 as a dirt track, the inaugural race was the first Kanonloppet on 4 June 1950. For the second Kanonloppet in 1952, the surface had been paved with asphalt and the length was . It was extended to in 1953 with the addition of the ''Björkdungskurvan'' section (later renamed to ''Tröskurvan''). In 1958 it was additionally extended to with the ''Velodromkurvan'' section (Velodrome bend). John Woodley (born Brisbane, Queensland, 9 February 1938) is an ordained Methodist minister and was a Senator representing the state of Queensland, Australia, in the Australian Senate. Life before politics Woodley was briefly in the Australian Defence Force from 1957 to 1959. Education Woodley was educated at the Melbourne College of Divinity and Brisbane College of Theology. Christian ministry Prior to entering politics, Woodley was ordained a minister of the Methodist Church in October 1962 and continued his clerical duties with its successor, the Uniting Church in Australia, after church union in June 1977. During his ministry, Woodley worked mainly in rural churches and had extensive contact with Aboriginal people. Stephen James Parrish (born 24 February 1953 in Cambridge, England) also known as "Stavros", is a British former professional motorcycle and truck racer, who is now a motorsport television commentator and speaker/entertainer. Racing career Parrish turned professional at the age of 22 in 1976, winning the ACU Solo title in the British Motor Cycle Championship. He was a team mate to Barry Sheene on a Suzuki RG 500 in the 1977 500 cc world championship, finishing fifth overall, but returned to British-based riding to become the 1978 500cc ACU 'Gold Star' Champion. He also won the British Shell 500 title in both 1979 and 1980, and a British Superbike title in 1981. Bruno Kneubühler (born 3 December 1946) is a Swiss former professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He competed in the Grand Prix motorcycle racing world championships from 1972 to 1989. During his career, he competed in every Grand Prix class from 50 cc to 500cc. Motorcycle racing career In his first Grand Prix season in 1972, Kneubühler finished the 500cc season in third place behind the dominant MV Agusta factory racing team of Giacomo Agostini and Alberto Pagani. He also won the season-ending 350cc Spanish Grand Prix held on the Montjuich street circuit, finishing ahead of Renzo Pasolini and János Drapál. Jack Middelburg
Jack Middelburg (30 April 1952 – 3 April 1984) was a Dutch professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Together with Wil Hartog and Boet van Dulmen, he was part of a contingent of Dutch riders who competed at the highest levels of Grand Prix racing in the late 1970s. Middelburg never earned a factory-sponsored race bike, yet managed to post some impressive results. Motorcycling career Middelburg became the second Dutchman to win the Dutch TT in 1980, and in 1981 he pulled off an unexpected upset when he defeated the defending world champion, Kenny Roberts at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. His best years were in 1979 and 1981, when he finished in seventh place in the 500cc world championships. Middelburg was the last privateer to win a motorcycle Grand Prix in the 500cc class.
