1978 Holiday Bowl
The 1978 Holiday Bowl was the inaugural college football bowl game of the Holiday Bowl. It was played on December 22, 1978, at San Diego Stadium in San Diego, California. The game was part of the 1978 NCAA Division I-A football season. It featured the Navy Midshipmen against the BYU Cougars. Navy won 23–16. Background Navy won their first seven games of the season, the most wins in a streak in years. A loss to Notre Dame sparked a losing streak that spanned to their games against Syracuse and Florida State, but the Midshipmen managed to rout Army 28–0 to win their eighth game, the most in a season since the nine win year in 1963. The 1978 BYU Cougars football team represented the Brigham Young University (BYU) in the 1978 NCAA Division I-A football season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Brigham Young University (BYU, sometimes referred to colloquially as The Y) is a private research university in Provo, Utah. 1996 Aloha Bowl
The 1996 Aloha Bowl was a college football bowl game played December 25, 1996, in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was part of the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. It featured the Navy Midshipmen, and the California Golden Bears. The game started with California cornerback Deltha O'Neal taking the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, giving the Golden Bears a 6-0 lead, but the extra point was blocked. Navy answered with a 7-yard touchdown run from tailback Tim Canada taking a 7-6 lead with 6:21 remaining in the 1st quarter. The Golden Bears retook the lead just 3 minutes later with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Pat Barnes to Bobby Shaw giving Cal a 13-7 lead. The 1984 Holiday Bowl was one of the games that determined the College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national championship in college football for the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season, 1984 season. Jim McMahon
James Robert McMahon Jr. (born August 21, 1959) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 seasons, most notably with the Chicago Bears. McMahon played college football at BYU, where he was a two-time All-American and later a 1998 inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame. He was selected by the Bears fifth overall in the 1982 NFL Draft. McMahon achieved his greatest professional success with the 1985 Bears team that won the franchise's first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots. 1977 Fiesta Bowl
The 1977 Fiesta Bowl was the seventh edition of the college football bowl game, played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday, December 25. Part of the 1977–78 bowl game season, it matched the eighth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions and the #15 Arizona State Sun Devils of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Favored Penn State took an early lead and won 42–30 on the Sun Devils' home field. Holy War (BYU–Utah)
The Holy War is the name given to the American college football rivalry game played annually by the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and the University of Utah (U of U) Utes. It is part of the larger BYU–Utah sports rivalry. In this context, the term "Holy War" refers to the fact that BYU is owned and administered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and the University of Utah is a public university with a large LDS student population. The proximity of the two schools, the athletic successes of the two teams, and the longevity of the series all continue to foster the rivalry. 1963 Navy Midshipmen Football Team
The 1963 Navy Midshipmen football team represented the United States Naval Academy as an independent in the 1963 NCAA University Division football season. Led by fifth-year head coach Wayne Hardin, the Midshipmen finished the year with an overall record of 9–2 and a loss against Texas in the Cotton Bowl Classic. Quarterback Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award while leading the Midshipmen to a 9–1 regular season record and a final ranking of No. 2 in the nation. He led Navy to victory over their annual rivalry with Notre Dame, which would be the Midshipmen's last win over Notre Dame until 2007.
