1978 FIFA World Cup
The 1978 FIFA World Cup was the 11th edition of the FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football world championship tournament among the men's senior national teams. It was held in Argentina between 1 and 25 June. The Cup was won by the host nation, Argentina, who defeated the Netherlands 3–1 in the final, after extra time. The final was held at River Plate's home stadium, Estadio Monumental, in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. This win was the first World Cup title for Argentina, who became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England, and West Germany) to be both hosts and world champions and the third South American team to win a World Cup. Argentina, the Netherlands, and Brazil were the gold, silver, and bronze medalists, respectively. Iran and Tunisia made their first appearances in the tournament. Mario Kempes
Mario Alberto Kempes Chiodi (; born 15 July 1954) is an Argentine former professional footballer who played as a striker or attacking midfielder. A prolific goalscorer, he finished as La Liga's top goalscorer twice with Valencia and amassed 116 goals in 184 league games for the club. At international level, Kempes was the focal point of Argentina's 1978 World Cup win where he scored twice in the final and received the Golden Boot as top goalscorer. He also won the Golden Ball for the player of the tournament, making him one of only three players to have won all three awards at a single World Cup, along with Garrincha in 1962 and Paolo Rossi in 1982. Rubén Oscar Pagnanini (born 31 January 1949 in San Nicolás de los Arroyos, Buenos Aires Province) is an Argentine former football player who played for the Argentina national team. He played for Estudiantes de La Plata, Club Atlético Independiente, Argentinos Juniors and Minnesota Kicks. Playing for Estudiantes, he won the 1969 Copa Libertadores and 1970 Copa Libertadores. His greatest achievements at the local club level were winning the Nacional championships of 1977 and 1978 with Independiente. Miguel Oviedo
Miguel Ángel Oviedo (born 12 October 1950 in Córdoba) is an Argentine former football midfielder who was part of the Argentina squad that won the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Oviedo played his entire club career in the Argentine league system, starting with Instituto de Córdoba in 1973. In 1974, he was signed by Instituto's fierce local rivals Talleres de Córdoba. Over the next eight years Talleres were one of the strongest teams in Argentina, they reached several Semi-Finals in the Nacional championships and lost the final in 1977 on the away goals rule to Club Atlético Independiente. Oscar Alberto Ortiz (born 8 April 1953 in Chacabuco, Buenos Aires) is a retired Argentine footballer who played as a winger. Career The most notable achievement of his footballing career was being part of the Argentina team that won the World Cup 1978. Leopoldo Jacinto Luque (; (3 May 1949 – 15 February 2021) was an Argentine footballer who played as a striker. Club career In a career spanning from 1972 to 1984 he played for Unión de Santa Fe, Rosario Central, River Plate, Racing Club de Avellaneda and Chacarita Juniors. On 22 February 1976, Luque scored all five goals in a game in which his team, River Plate, defeated San Lorenzo de Almagro 5–1. International career With Argentina he was 1978 World Champion, scoring four goals in the tournament, including a spectacular long distance volley against France during the first round. During that tournament, his brother died in a traffic accident on the day that Argentina played Italy. Ricardo La Volpe
Ricardo Antonio La Volpe Guarchoni (; born 6 February 1952) is an Argentine former professional footballer and manager. He is a World Cup-winning goalkeeper who played for most of his career in Argentina and Mexico. As a coach, La Volpe was in charge of both the Mexico and Costa Rica national teams, coaching the former at the 2006 World Cup. Omar Larrosa
Omar Ruben Larrosa (born 18 November 1947 in Lanús, Buenos Aires) is a retired Argentine footballer, who played as a midfielder, and the current assistant coach at Boca Juniors. He is perhaps most famous for having been part of the Argentine 1978 World Cup winning team. Club career Larrosa started his career at Boca Juniors in 1967, but he was soon allowed to leave by the club. He played for Argentinos Juniors for the 1969 season and although the team struggled, Larrosa played well and was invited to return to Boca. In the 1970 season Larrosa won his first trophy although he didn't actually play in the final of the Nacional against Rosario Central.
