Listed below are the dates and results for the 1978 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the Asian and Oceanian zone ( AFC and OFC). However, South Vietnam could not compete after being annexed by Vietnam. The Asian zone was allocated 1 place (out of 16) in the final tournament. Niwat Srisawat (Thai นิวัฒน์ ศรีสวัสดิ์), or his nickname Tong (born 19 August 1947) is a Thai former football player who represented the Thailand national team from 1967 to 1979. Datuk James Wong (born 26 June 1953) is a former Malaysian footballer who is a striker for Malaysia national football team and Sabah. Jafar Namdar (2 July 1934 – 1 January 2014) was an Iranian football referee. Refereeing career Namdar officiated as a referee at the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cups. When he refereed Australia vs Chile at the 1974 FIFA World Cup Namdar became only the second Asian referee ( George Suppiah beat him by three days) to officiate as a referee at a FIFA World Cup.
