1978 FIFA World Cup Group 3
Group 3 of the 1978 FIFA World Cup was one of four groups of nations competing at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. The group consisted of Brazil, Austria, Spain and Sweden. In their first world cup since 1958, Austrian players retrieved a part of their past glory. They won the group before an astonished Brazil. "Auriverdes" who scored only two goals were thrilling until the end of the third game. An Austrian equalizer could send Spain to the next round. Finally, Brazilians clinched the second place to reach the second round where they had to play against the Argentinians hosts and Peruvians in a "Latin American coloured group". 1978 FIFA World Cup
The 1978 FIFA World Cup was the 11th edition of the FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football world championship tournament among the men's senior national teams. It was held in Argentina between 1 and 25 June. The Cup was won by the host nation, Argentina, who defeated the Netherlands 3–1 in the final, after extra time. The final was held at River Plate's home stadium, Estadio Monumental, in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. This win was the first World Cup title for Argentina, who became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England, and West Germany) to be both hosts and world champions and the third South American team to win a World Cup. Argentina, the Netherlands, and Brazil were the gold, silver, and bronze medalists, respectively. Iran and Tunisia made their first appearances in the tournament. Friedrich Koncilia
Friedrich Koncilia (born 25 February 1948) is an Austrian former professional football who played as a goalkeeper. Club career Born in Klagenfurt, Koncilia made his debut for local side Austria Klagenfurt at 17, moving to SV Wattens in 1969. After two seasons there he enjoyed his longest and most successful spell at FC Wacker Innsbruck, staying there for eight years (teammates included his younger brother Peter, a midfielder). He moved abroad to R.S.C. Anderlecht of Belgium, only to return to Austria after a mere eight games and finished his career at Austria Wien. A back injury forced him to retire at 37. Heribert Weber (born 28 June 1955 in Pöls) is a retired Austrian football defender and later a football manager. He currently works as Sky Austria's main pundit and analyst for their coverage of the Austrian Football Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. Josef Hickersberger (born 27 April 1948) is a former professional football player and former coach of the Austria national football team and Austrian club side Rapid Wien. Bruno Edmund Pezzey (3 February 1955 – 31 December 1994) was an Austrian professional footballer who played as a defender. Club career Regarded as one of Austria's greatest defenders of all time, Pezzey started his professional career at local side FC Vorarlberg and moved to FC Wacker Innsbruck after only one season, winning two league titles and a domestic cup.
