The 1977–78 John Player Cup was the seventh edition of England's premier rugby union club competition at the time. Gloucester won the competition defeating Leicester in the final. Anglo-Welsh Cup
The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. Paul Dodge
Paul William Dodge (born 26 February 1958 in Leicester, England) is a former English rugby union international footballer who gained 32 caps for his country between 1978 and 1985. His Leicester Tigers career earned him 436 appearances. Dodge started playing for his local club, Syston RFC, from where he progressed to join Tigers as a youth player and as a 17-year-old, made his first team debut in the annual Christmas fixture against the Barbarians. Chalkie White (rugby Player)
Herbert Victor "Chalkie" White (16 January 1929 – 24 January 2005) was an English rugby union player and later coach, instrumental in the success of Leicester Tigers. White was born in Carlisle and served in the Royal Navy before becoming a schoolteacher, having previously undertaken a 4-year specialist course in Physical Education at Borough Road College, Isleworth. He played scrum-half for Old Creightonians, Penzance & Newlyn, Camborne RFC and Leicester Tigers before his career was ended after he was diagnosed with Ménière’s disease and lost his sense of balance. He thus turned to coaching Leicester, while teaching at Nottingham High School. At this time the game was still amateur, and coaching frowned upon as "cheating", but White installed a professional attitude at Leicester. Ian "Dosser" Smith
Ian Robert "Dosser" Smith (born 26 November 1957), is an English schoolmaster, director of Coaching at Uppingham School, and former player (in the flanker position), captain in the mid-1980s, and later coach of Leicester Tigers. He made 331 first XV appearances for Leicester, including five John Player Cup Finals (1978–1982), of which three were won, and scored a total of 67 tries. However, he was not capped by England. Peter Wheeler (rugby Union)
Peter John Wheeler, CBE (born 26 November 1948) is a former international rugby union player who played hooker and was Chief Executive of Leicester Tigers. Early life Wheeler attended Brockley County Grammar School and went on to play for Old Brockleians Rugby Club and Kent for three seasons. Playing career Wheeler was considered a tough and technically proficient hooker and was integral to Leicester's innovative and expansive style of play. Wheeler captained Leicester Tigers to three consecutive wins in the John Player Cup from 1979 to 1981 and played 349 games for the club from 1969 to 1985. Steve Redfern
Stephen Paul Redfern (born 26 October 1957) is an English former rugby union and professional rugby league player in the 1970s and 1980s. He played one test for in 1984, and between 1976 and 1984 played club rugby for Leicester Tigers. His position was tighthead prop. He then played professional rugby league for Sheffield Eagles, but injury limited him to only 9 appearance. Early years Redfern was born in Leicester, England. He attended Markfield High School and Coalville Grammar School. Redfern played his junior rugby for Coalville. Steve Johnson (rugby Union)
Steve Johnson is a former Leicester Tigers and England national rugby union team, England blindside flanker. He made 207 appearances during the period 1976-83 for Leicester Tigers. Johnson scored 31 tries for the Tigers and captained the club from 1981–83, making his final appearance in the John Player Cup final against Bristol. Garry John Adey (13 June 1945 – 17 August 2023) was an English rugby union Number 8 (rugby union), Number 8 for Leicester Tigers and . Adey made 381 appearances for Leicester Tigers, Leicester between 1965–81. He played twice for in 1976. Bleddyn Jones
Bleddyn Jones (7 August 1948 ― 27 April 2021) was a Welsh people, Welsh rugby commentator who worked principally for BBC Radio Leicester, sports commentator, commentating on Leicester Tigers matches since 1987. As a player, he made 333 appearances for Tigers, mostly at fly-half between 1969 and 1978, scoring 42 tries.http://www.leicestertigers.com/news/12482.php He was not capped internationally. In his professional life he worked as a teacher. For the opening of the Caterpillar Stand at Welford Road Stadium, Welford Road in 2007, Jones was voted by readers of the Leicester Mercury into the "Walk of Legends" Team, ahead of Les Cusworth, Andy Goode and Joel Stransky. Bob Barker (rugby Union)
Robert George Barker (born 23 October 1944) is a former rugby union wing who played 320 times for Leicester Tigers between 1968 and 1979. In 1977 he became only the third Leicester player to score 150 tries for the club, and is still joint third in the clubs List of Leicester Tigers records and statistics, list of all time try scorers. Barker made his Leicester debut against Northampton Saints on 19 October 1968, despite scoring a try Barker was not used again until March when he became more of a regular featuring in 14 of the last 17 matches that season. Originally a centre Barker switched to his more common position on the wing during the 1969-70 season, during which he became the club's regular goal kicker and was the season's top scorer with 145 points.
