1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Men's Race
The Senior men's race at the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Düsseldorf, West Germany, at the Galopprennbahn Düsseldorf-Grafenberg on March 20, 1977. Michael Karst (born 28 January 1952 in Mannheim) is a retired 3000 m steeplechaser from West Germany. Biography He finished fifth at the 1976 Summer Olympics, first at the 1977 World Cup and fourth at the 1978 European Championships. He also won two silver and one gold medal at the Summer Universiades in 1973, 1975 and 1977. At the 1977 European Indoor Championships he finished sixth in 3000 metres. In June 1974 he set a new European record of 8:18.4 minutes, which he improved to a then-national record of 8:18.0 at the 1974 European Championships where he won the bronze medal. He improved his (West) German record on two occasions in Stockholm, first to 8:16.2 minutes in July 1975 and finally to 8:14.05 minutes in July 1977. Eric De Beck
Erik De Beck (born 6 June 1951) is a Belgian former long-distance runner who specialised in cross country running. His greatest performance was a gold medal at the 1974 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He shared in the team title at that event on three occasions: 1973, 1974 and 1977. De Beck won three national titles in his career, taking two cross country wins (1974 and 1976) and one 10,000 metres title (1983). He totalled nine appearances at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships as well as three outings at its precursor, the International Cross Country Championships, where he was a junior medallist in 1970. Allister Hutton (born 18 July 1954) is a former elite long-distance runner from Scotland, who won the London Marathon in 1990. He competed in three consecutive Commonwealth Games for Scotland during his career, starting in 1978. Running for Edinburgh Southern Harriers (now incorporated into Edinburgh AC), Hutton was Scottish National Cross-country champion in 1978 and 1982. Mariano Haro
Mariano Haro Cisneros (born 27 May 1940) is a former Spanish athlete, competing in the long-distance events. He was born in Becerril de Campos. Haro ran almost compulsively using his gifted legs to run errands and handle odd jobs. He soon became prominently competitive in a sport he hardly chose. In the 1960s he won almost every 5,000 and 10,000 meter event held in Spain. His closest Spanish competitor was Javier Alvarez Salgado. Haro placed 4th in the 10,000-meter 1972 Summer Olympics final at Munich in an epic battle against Lasse Virén, Emiel Puttemans, Miruts Yifter, and Frank Shorter.
