1977 Chatham Cup
The 1977 Chatham Cup was the 50th annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. Early stages of the competition were run in three regions (northern, central, and southern), with the National League teams receiving a bye until the Fourth Round of the competition. In all, 142 teams took part in the competition. Note: Different sources give different numberings for the rounds of the competition: some start round one with the beginning of the regional qualifications; others start numbering from the first national knock-out stage. The former numbering scheme is used in this article. The 1977 final Nelson United became the first team from outside the four main urban centres to win the cup since 1962. Newmarket Park
Newmarket Park is an approximately 6 ha large park in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located in the triangle between three suburbs, northeast of the Newmarket, southeast of Parnell and northwest of Remuera. It is located partially on a higher, man-made plateau, with the remainder of the park dropping steeply down towards Newmarket Stream running to Hobson Bay along the eastern edge of the park. In the early 2010s, a major remediation and upgrade of the park occurred. History In the early European history of the area, the gully containing the park and the Slaughter House Creek (now Newmarket Stream) was used as a rubbish dump. East Coast Bays (soccer)
East Coast Bays is a football club located on Auckland's North Shore. The club has won the Chatham Cup and the NRFL Premier Division three times. History East Coast Bays were founded following a public meeting held at the Progressive Hall (since demolished and replaced by the Bays Club) in October 1958. The committee formed from this meeting entered four junior teams for the start of the 1959 season. As some of the committee members were supporters of Glasgow Rangers, the colours of Royal Blue shirts, white shorts, and royal Blue sox were adopted. Mount Roskill (soccer)
Three Kings United Football Club is a youth football club based in Three Kings, Auckland, New Zealand. They previously competed in the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1, with their last appearance coming in 2019. In 2020, Three Kings United merged with Onehunga Sports to form Auckland United, which assumed Onehunga's position in the 2020 NRFL Premier season; the club's youth and social sectors remain in operation. Three Kings' home ground is Keith Hay Park, with a number of other parks used around central Auckland. Club history The club was founded in 1997 through the amalgamation of Eden AFC (founded 1947) and Mount Roskill AFC (founded 1954). Metro AFC
Metro F.C. is a New Zealand association football club, based in Auckland, that will compete in the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 for the 2020 season, after winning promotion from Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 2 during the 2019 season. The club was known as Metro College until the 1980s. They were members of the former top premier New Zealand football league the New Zealand National Soccer League which ended in 2004 to give way to the New Zealand Football Championship. Courier Rangers
Courier Rangers, known prior to 1968 as Otahuhu Rangers, is a former New Zealand football club based in the suburb of Otahuhu, Auckland. The team was a member of the New Zealand National Soccer League in 1978 and 1979, finishing fifth on their first season but being relegated after finishing 11th out of 12 teams in the second. Their best performance in the Chatham Cup came in 1977, when they reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Nelson United. The team disbanded in 1982. Manurewa (soccer)
Manurewa AFC is an amateur football (soccer) club in Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. They will compete in Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 with newly appointed head coach Marty Rodwell History Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. The merged entity initially used the portmanteau name of Tramurewa, during which time the club won the 1931 Chatham Cup. Tramuwera reverted to the name of Manurewa in 1959, the name currently used by the club. Manurewa competed in the New Zealand National Soccer League from 1979 to 1992, finishing as champions in 1983. Manawatu United
Manawatu United (previously known as YoungHeart Manawatu) was a football club based in Palmerston North, New Zealand. It participated in the New Zealand Football Championship, and fielded a youth side in the National Youth League. Their home ground was Memorial Park. In 2014, the team was renamed to Manawatu United. History Manawatu United was formed in 2004, under the name YoungHeart Manawatu, to compete in the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC). Based in Palmerston North, they were the sole franchise in the region. In the inaugural NZFC season (2004–2005), Manawatu United finished bottom of the league. Huntly Thistle
Huntly Thistle are an association football club based in the New Zealand town of Huntly, in the northern Waikato region. The club currently have teams in the WaiBop Premiership, Senior Men's, Senior Women's, Juniors and WSSFA College. Earlier points in their history they were one of the stronger teams in the Waikato. The club played in the top flight of the Northern League in the early 1970s, and at that time contained the club's only full international player, Jim Moyes. The team has reached the last-32 stage of the Chatham Cup on three occasions, in 1971, 1977, and 1989. Napier City Rovers is a football team based in Napier, New Zealand, competing in the Central Premier League. Club history The team was founded in 1973 via a merger of Napier Rovers and Napier City. Napier City Rovers have won New Zealand's premier knockout football competition (the Chatham Cup) five times, in 1985, 1993, 2000, 2002, and 2019 won the old New Zealand National Soccer League in 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2000. Gisborne City
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup.
