1976 WANFL Season
The 1976 WANFL season was the 92nd season of the Western Australian National Football League in its various incarnations. After a half-decade in which the fortunes of all WANFL clubs, with the exception of East Perth, fluctuated severely, 1975 and 1976 saw a return to more stability, with Perth establishing themselves along with East Perth and South Fremantle as the top three of the league. Claremont, six games clear on the bottom in 1975, began with seven wins from ten matches but won only once more, whilst 1975 premiers West Perth had a disastrous start with injuries but recovered in June and July to clearly re-establish themselves as one of the top bracket. Under coach Ken Armstrong, the Demons won their first premiership since Mal Atwell's great team from 1968 – remarkably not one 1968 premiership player appeared eight years later. Peter Spencer (footballer)
Peter Spencer (born 11 January 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the East Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and North Melbourne Football Club, North Melbourne in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). He is a dual Sandover Medallist, winning the award in 1976 and 1984 and a triple F. D. Book Medallist (best and fairest at East Perth), winning the award 1975 WANFL season, in 1975, 1976 WANFL season, 1976 and 1984 WAFL season, 1984. He played for Western Australia in the 1979 Perth State of Origin Carnival, before moving to Victoria to play for the Kangaroos 1981 VFL season, in 1981 and 1982 VFL season, 1982. East Fremantle Oval
East Fremantle Oval (known under a sponsorship agreement as New Choice Homes Park and nicknamed "Shark Park",) is an Australian rules football ground located in East Fremantle, Western Australia. The ground was opened in 1906, and underwent a large redevelopment in 1953. It current serves as the home ground of the East Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). East Fremantle Oval has a capacity of around 20,000 people, but has hosted in excess of this number previously, with a record crowd of 21,317 for a match between East Fremantle and 1979 WANFL season, in 1979. Robert Wiley
Robert John Wiley (born 24 March 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and for the Richmond Football Club and West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). An inaugural member of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame, Wiley is regarded as one of the finest rovers of his era. He later coached Perth and , and was an assistant coach at West Coast. Garry Sidebottom
Garry Thomas Sidebottom (21 November 1954 – 28 March 2019) was an Australian rules football player who played for the St Kilda, Geelong and Fitzroy Football Clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) during the 1970s and 1980s. Career Sidebottom was a powerful and fearless player ideal for playing at centre half forward or as a ruckman. A versatile forward good in the air and hard in the clinches, he kicked 227 goals while at Swan Districts and 145 goals while in the VFL. He played in the inaugural State of Origin team for Western Australia in 1977 when Western Australia defeated Victoria. Mel Whinnen
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE (born 6 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions. He was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Mal Brown
Malcolm Gregory "Mal" Brown (born 26 October 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League and West Australian National Football League. He is described as "one of the most colourful and controversial characters" of the game. He was a highly controversial character not only for his many visits to the tribunal during his playing career but also for a number of incidents when coaching as well. Career Brown played in the WAFL (West Australian Football League ) for East Perth, Claremont and South Fremantle. His honours as a player include the Sandover Medal in 1969 and three best and fairests at East Perth (1969, 70, 72). Maurice Rioli
Maurice Joseph Rioli Sr. (1 September 195725 December 2010) was an Australian rules footballer who represented St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL), in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and in the Victorian Football League. Ray Bauskis
Raymond Valdi Bauskis (born 17 June 1954) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) between 1972 and 1980. He was the leading goalkicker in the league for the 1977 and 1978 WANFL seasons, and played in losing grand finals in 1975 and 1979. Bauskis made his senior debut for South Fremantle in round thirteen of the 1972 season. His first full season was 1974, where he kicked 34 goals from 13 games to finish as the club's leading goalkicker. He repeated this feat for another five consecutive seasons, ending his career in 1980 with 436 goals from 117 games. The most goals Bauskis ever kicked in a single game was 13, against in round 11 of the 1979 season. Woodville Football Club
Woodville Football Club was an Australian rules football club that competed in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) from 1964 to 1990, when it merged in 1991 with the West Torrens Football Club to form the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles. Based in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, Woodville derived its name from the suburb it was located in. Gordon Casey (born 25 March 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton and Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
