1976 Thomas Cup
The 1976 Thomas Cup was the tenth edition of Thomas Cup, the world championship of men's international team badminton (its female counterpart is the Uber Cup). The final rounds contested by qualifying teams were held in Bangkok, Thailand in late May and early June. First played in 1949 Thomas Cup, 1948–49, the Thomas Cup competition was held every three years after that until 1982 Thomas Cup, 1982 and has been held every two years since. The 1970 Thomas Cup was the eighth tournament of Thomas Cup, the most important men's badminton team competition in the world. The final set of ''ties'' (team matches) were held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Indonesia won its fourth title after beating Malaysia in the Final Round. Teams 25 teams took part in the competition, 3 of them in the Australasian Zone, 8 in the Asian Zone, 9 in the European Zone and 5 in the Pan American Zone. The Iran national badminton team ( fa, تیم ملی بدمینتون ایران) represents Iran in international badminton team competitions. The national team of Iran is administered by the Iran Badminton Federation. The Iranian junior badminton team competed in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships mixed team event in 2011. The team were eliminated in the group stages. History Badminton has been played in Iran since the early 20th century. The sport was brought over to the country when British oil experts came to the country following the establishment of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company and played badminton in their spare time. James Richard Poole
James Richard "Jim" Poole (February 6, 1932–November 7, 2021) was an American badminton player who won national and international championships between 1958 and 1979, and a National Football League official. Career Though he did not focus on the sport until the late 1950s when in his mid twenties, Jim Poole went on to have a remarkably long career in high level badminton. He rated among the world's leading singles players in the early 1960s, during which time he became the first of only four non-Asians to win the Malaya (Malaysia) Open singles title (1961). Poole won the U.S. Open singles title in 1958 and 1961 and reached the final of both the U.S. and Irish Opens in 1968 at age 36. Raphi Kanchanaraphi (1936 – February 19, 2010) was a world-class badminton player who represented both Thailand and Canada in international competition, and won national doubles and mixed doubles titles in both countries. Career Known for his anticipation and racket control, Kanchanaraphi was one of a cadre of fine Thai doubles players who helped Thailand to strongly contend for the Thomas Cup (men's international team competition trophy) in both 1961 and 1964. In partnership with Narong Bhornchima, Kanchanaraphi won 15 of his 18 Thomas Cup doubles matches in those two seasons, the wins including both of his doubles matches against Indonesia in the 1961 Challenge Round. Channarong Ratanaseangsuang (born 1939), also known as Ratana, is a former badminton player and coach who represented both Thailand and Canada in international competition. Career With a game marked by impressive mobility and consistency, during the 1960s he rated among the world's elite singles players. Wayne Macdonnell
Wayne Macdonnell (born June 28, 1940 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a former Canadian badminton player. He was a dominant figure in Canadian badminton in the 1960s and 1970s, mainly in the men's singles events. He remained a top ranked badminton player for eighteen years. Macdonnell won five British Columbia Provincial Championships in the singles category, in 1961, 1962, 1964, 1966, and 1967. He also won three men's doubles championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1975. Wayne Macdonnell won the Canada National Championship for the first time in 1962, at the age of 21; he won this title again in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1967, setting an undefeated record of six consecutive titles in the singles competition. The Mexico national badminton team ( es, Selección de bádminton de México) represents Mexico in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Mexican Badminton Federation. Mexico competed in the Sudirman Cup four times from 1991 until 2001. The Mexico men's team qualified for their first Thomas Cup in 2016 after winning the 2016 Pan Am Team Badminton Championships after beating Canada in the gold medal tie with a score of 3–0. The Canada national badminton team (french: Équipe nationale de badminton du Canada) represents Canada in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by the nation's governing body of badminton, Badminton Canada. The team's best result was achieving two semifinal finishes in both Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup.
