1976 Espirito Santo Trophy
The 1976 Espirito Santo Trophy took place 6–9 October at Vilamoura Golf Club in, Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal. It was the seventh women's golf World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 25 teams, each with up to three players. The best two scores for each round counted towards the team total. The United States team won the Trophy, defending their title from two years ago and winning their sixth consecutive title, beating team France by 17 strokes. France took the silver medal and Brazil, on the podium for the first time, took the bronze. Teams 25 teams contested the event. Each team had three players, except Sri Lanka, who only had two. Vilamoura
Vilamoura is a coastal resort in the Loulé municipality in Algarve, Portugal. It is one of the three corners of Algarve's Golden Triangle. Vilamoura comprises one of the largest single tourist complexes in Europe and with about 2,000 hectares of land. The nearest airport is in Faro. The area previously hosted the annual Almond Blossom Cross Country competition between 1996 and 2003, and the same course was selected as the venue for the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. History The resort developed around a small harbour, flanked by sandy beaches and close to the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila. Betty Stanhope-Cole
Betty Stanhope-Cole (September 21, 1937 – January 27, 2017) was a Canadian amateur golfer. She is a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Early life Stanhope-Cole was born in Calgary and moved to Edmonton in her teen years. In her younger years, she played tennis. She was taught how to golf by Edmonton golf pros Alex Olynyk and Henry Martell. Career In 1974 and 1976, she was ranked as the top women's golfer in Canada. She was Canadian Junior Girls champion in 1956, Canadian Women's Amateur champion in 1957, and Canadian Ladies' Close champion in 1967. She has also been a member of the Canadian Commonwealth Golf Team (1963, 1971) and Canadian World Team (1964, 1974, and 1976). In 1980, she was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Liv Wollin (née Forsell) (born 17 April 1945) is a Swedish professional golfer, who is regarded as having been one of the best Swedish female amateur players ever. Early life Wollin grew up in Lidingö outside Stockholm, Sweden, as the only girl among five siblings. Her parents were Jacob Forsell and Mette, nee Grut, and they were not golfers. Pia Nilsson (born 8 May 1958) is a Sweden, Swedish professional golfer and coach. She was one of the two players, who were the first female Swedes to play collegiate golf at a University in the United States and the first Swede to captain a European Solheim Cup team. Early years Born in Malmö, Nilsson began playing golf at around 10 years of age, with her family at Torekov Golf Club in another part of Scania in southern Sweden, when they spend their summers there. Cristina Marsans Astoreca (9 May 1946 – 26 August 2018) also known as Marquesa de Artasona, was a Spanish golfer, best known for popularizing competitive golf in Spain. Alison Sheard (born 21 September 1951) is a South African professional golfer who played on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and LPGA Tour. During her career, Sheard became the first-non British champion of the Women's British Open in 1979 and won three other LET events. Amateur career Sheard was born on 21 September 1951 in Durban, South Africa. At Souuh African golf events held by Golf RSA, Sheard won the SA Women's Stroke Play five times from 1974 to 1979. Federica Dassù (born 17 February 1957) is an Italian professional golfer. Career Dassù was born in Milan. She turned professional in 1983 and joined the Women Professional Golfers' European Tour (now the Ladies European Tour). She won her last Ladies European Tour title, the 2003 Open de España Femenino at an age of 44, the oldest LET winner at the time, and announced her retirement at the end of the season. Jennifer Constance Lee Smith (born 2 December 1948) is an English golfer, known for winning the inaugural Women's British Open in 1976 at Fulford Golf Club, York, England and later winning the Order of Merit on the Women's Professional Golf Association tour (now Ladies European Tour) in 1981 and 1982. Catherine Rita Panton-Lewis (born 14 June 1955) is a Scottish professional golfer who was a founding member of the Ladies European Tour and won its first Order of Merit. Her father was John Panton, MBE, a professional golfer who played on three Ryder Cup teams. Panton was born in Bridge of Allan, Scotland.
