Events * 28 February – Television in Australia switches to full-time colour, marking the last day of Australian television in black and white. Colour transmission would launch officially on 1 March on Saturday at 12:00am. Seven Network, The 0-10 Network and ABC stayed on air all night for the occasion. * 28 February – The ABC airs a spin-off television special of ''The Aunty Jack Show'', called ''Aunty Jack Introduces Colour''. Television in Australia began experimentally as early as 1929 in Melbourne with radio stations 3DB and 3UZ, and 2UE in Sydney, using the ''Radiovision'' system by Gilbert Miles and Donald McDonald, and later from other locations, such as Brisbane in 1934.Carty, Bruce, ''On the Air: Australian Radio History'', privately published, 2011, Gosford, NSW Mainstream television was launched on 16 September 1956 in Willoughby, New South Wales, with Nine Network station TCN-9 Sydney. ''Number 96'' is an Australian primetime soap opera that aired on Network 10, 0-10 Network (the forerunner of what is now Network Ten) from 13 March 1972 to 11 August 1977, broadcast in the primetime slot of 8:30 pm every weeknight. ''The Last of the Australians'' was an Australian sitcom that was broadcast on the Nine Network in 1975 and 1976. The comedy series was produced by Crawford Productions in two series of 13 episodes each. ABC (Australian TV Channel)
ABC TV, formerly known as ABC1, is an Australian national public television network. It is owned and operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and is the flagship ABC Television network. The headquarters of the ABC TV channel and the ABC are in Ultimo, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. The network began operating on 5 November 1956 as the ABC National Television Service, starting in Sydney, followed by Melbourne, with other stations being established in state capitals and regional areas in the following years. In the 1960s and 1970s, the network was also referred to as ABC National Television, or ABC Television. Until the introduction of digital television in 2001, the network was the only domestic television service broadcast by the ABC. ''The Unisexers'' is an Australian television soap opera made by the Cash Harmon Television production company, (best known for creating the soap opera ''Number 96''), it ran for a single season for the Nine Network in 1975. Synopsis ''The Unisexers'' focused on a group of young people - both male and female - living together in a commune arrangement in the old house of a retired elderly couple whose children had left home. ''Until Tomorrow'' is an Australian television soap opera created by Reg Watson. The series was produced in colour by the Reg Grundy Organisation for the Seven Network in 1975. It was the second soap opera made by the Reg Grundy Organisation, the first having been '' Class of '74''. It is notable for having been made in Brisbane as opposed to Sydney or Melbourne, and was one of the few Australian soap operas produced for a daytime slot. Series synopsis ''Until Tomorrow'' examined the activities of various residents of the suburban Vale Street. Storylines involved revenge plots, murder, affairs, and blindness. The cast included Ron Cadee as Bill Wainwright, the corner shop keeper; television personality Hazel Phillips as Marge Stewart, a "widowed gossip on the look out for a mate"; Kaye Stevenson, Muriel Watson, Sue Robinson, Babette Stephens, and Barry Otto. The Nine Network (stylised 9Network, commonly known as Channel Nine or simply Nine) is an Australian commercial free-to-air television network. It is owned by parent company Nine Entertainment and is one of five main free-to-air television networks in Australia. From 2017 to 2021, the network's slogan has been "We Are the One". Since 2021, the network has changed its slogan back to the iconic Golden Era slogan "Still the One". The Graham Kennedy Show
''The Graham Kennedy Show'' was an Australian talk show which debuted on 19 September 1972 on the Nine Network. On 23 December 1969, host Graham Kennedy quit as host of ''In Melbourne Tonight'' due to exhaustion and rested for two years. In spite of his fame and fortune, he later described that period as "years of misery". After specials on 15 November 1971 and 2 March 1972, he returned with this series. Kennedy sparked controversy after a "crow-call", which sounded like the word "fuck", was broadcast in March 1975 (see below). Forced to prerecord from that point on, he abruptly departed following GTV-9's censorship of the 16 April 1975 edition. Graham Kennedy
Graham Cyril Kennedy AO (15 February 1934 – 25 May 2005) was an Australian entertainer, comedian and variety performer, as well as a personality and star of radio, theatre, television and film. He often performed in the style of vaudevillian and radio comedy star Roy Rene and was often called "Gra Gra" (pronounced "gray-gray"). Honoured as an officer of the Order of Australia, he was a six-time recipient of the Gold Logie, including the Logie Hall of Fame award, and won the Star of the Year Award in 1959. He is the most awarded star of Australian television. He was often referred to as "The King" or the "King of Australian television". He was also known for his collaborations with Australian entertainer Bert Newton and American-born television personality Don Lane. ''Eyewitness News'' is a style of television news presentation that emphasizes visual elements and action video, replacing the older "man-on-camera" newscast. History Pioneered by Westinghouse The earliest known use of the ''Eyewitness News'' name in American television was on April 6, 1959, when KYW-TV (now WKYC-TV) – at the time, based in Cleveland and owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting – launched the nation's first 90-minute local newscast (under the title ''Eyewitness''), which was combined with the then 15-minute national newscast. Cyclone Tracy
Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, from 24 to 26 December 1974. The small, developing easterly storm had been observed passing clear of the city initially, but then turned towards it early on 24 December. After 10:00 p.m. ACST, damage became severe, and wind gusts reached before instruments failed. The anemometer in Darwin Airport control tower had its needle bent in half by the strength of the gusts. Residents of Darwin were celebrating Christmas, and did not immediately acknowledge the emergency, partly because they had been alerted to an earlier cyclone ( Selma) that passed west of the city, and did not affect it in any way. Additionally, news outlets had only a skeleton crew on duty over the holiday.
