1975 Intercontinental Final
The 1975 Intercontinental Final was the inaugural Intercontinental Final, introduced for Motorcycle speedway riders as part of the qualification for the 1975 Speedway World Championship. Four time World Champion Ivan Mauger became the first Intercontinental Final winner, defeating reigning World Champion Anders Michanek by two points at the Ullevi Stadium in Göteborg. Another Swede Bernt Persson defeated Ole Olsen in a runoff for third place. Intercontinental Final
The Intercontinental Final was a Motorcycle speedway Final sanctioned by the FIM as the final qualifying round for the Speedway World Championship between 1975 and 2001. After being introduced in 1975, it replaced the European Final as the final qualifying round for Commonwealth, American and Nordic riders in 1976. The Intercontinental Final was not run from 1991-1994 when it was replaced by the World Semi-finals. It returned to the World Championship calendar in 1995, though unlike from 1975-1991 riders would be vying for a place in the following years Speedway Grand Prix World Championship series and not for the current year World Final. Peter Collins (1976), Ole Olsen (1978) and Bruce Penhall (1981) are the only riders who won the Intercontinental Final to go on and win the World Championship in the same year. Tommy Jansson
Per Tommy Jansson (2 October 1952 – 20 May 1976) was a motorcycle speedway rider. He was one of Sweden's most exciting speedway prospects in the 1970s but was killed in the Swedish Final a World Championship Qualifying Round meeting. He was the son of former Swedish International speedway rider Joel Jansson. His brother Bo (Bosse) Jansson was also a speedway rider. Speedway career Jansson initially appeared in the UK on 23 July 1970 while touring with the Young Sweden team in a British League Division Two test series against Young England. He rode at Teesside, scoring 10 points. He was injured in the second test match, at Workington, the following night, and he returned to Sweden. He came to England in 1971 to ride for the Wembley Lions making his debut on 9 April, in an away match against Wolverhampton, where he scored 6 points. Hasse Holmqvist (born 18 June 1945) is a former speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Holmqvist was a leading speedway rider in the late 1960s. He reached the final of the Speedway World Championship in the 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship and the 1969 Individual Speedway World Championship. Bengt Gustaf Jansson (born 9 January 1943 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a former Swedish international speedway rider. "Banger" was runner up in the 1967 World Final to fellow countryman Ove Fundin after losing a race-off and finished third in 1971, again after a run-off. John Boulger
John Boulger (born 18 June 1945 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider. After he retired from riding Solos in the early 1980s, Boulger raced somewhat successfully in Speedcars (Midgets) from the mid-1980s until the mid-1990s. Boulger won a record nine South Australian Championships (a record jointly held with 1951 and 1952 World Champion Jack Young) as well as two Australian Solo Championships during his career. As part of the Australian team, John Boulger won one World Championship during his career, this being the 1976 World Team Cup held at the White City Stadium in London, England. Boulger had the honour of captaining the team to Australia's first Speedway World Team Cup victory.
