Ari Paunonen
Ari Paunonen (born 10 March 1958) is a Finnish male former middle- and long-distance runner who competed over distances from 800 metres up to 10,000 metres. His best international performances at a major event were bronze at the 1977 European Cup and fifth at the 1983 European Athletics Indoor Championships. He was also the 1500 m silver medallist at the Nordic Indoor Athletics Championships in 1986. His personal best time of 3:55.65 minutes for the mile run is a Finnish record. He also set a European under-20 record of 7:43.20 minutes for the 3000 metres in 1977. As a junior athlete he won back-to-back 1500 m titles at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 1975 and 1977, as well as a junior race bronze at the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Volker Beck (born 30 June 1956 in Nordhausen, Bezirk Erfurt) is a former East German athlete, winner of 400 m hurdles at the 1980 Summer Olympics. With the best 400 m hurdler in the late 1970s and early 1980s Edwin Moses missing due to the boycott, the most likely winner of the Olympic gold was Volker Beck, the East German 400 m hurdles champion in 1980, 1981 and 1983. In Moscow, Beck won the 400 m hurdles in 48,70 s, beating second-placed Vasyl Arkhypenko from Soviet Union by 0.16 seconds, although it was the slowest Olympic final since 1964. John Treacy
John Treacy (born 4 June 1957 in Villierstown, County Waterford) is an Irish Olympian and former athlete, now a sporting administrator. Athletic career Treacy attended St Anne's Post-Primary School in Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland, running more than seven miles to school every morning. He graduated from Providence College in the United States. In 1978 and 1979 he won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow, Scotland and Limerick, Ireland respectively. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles he won a silver medal in the marathon, placing Ireland 33rd on the medals table. Treacy was known as a tenacious runner who did not have an especially sharp final kick in track races. In the 1978 European Athletics Championships in Prague, he placed 11th in the fast 10,000-metre race and fourth in the slow and tactical 5,000-metre race, losing to Italy's Venanzio Ortis by just three tenths of a second. Patriz Ilg (born 5 December 1957 in Aalen-Oberalfingen) is a retired 3000 m steeplechaser from West Germany. Biography He won a silver medal at the 1978 European Championships and gold medals at the 1982 European Championships in Athens and the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. At the European Indoor Championships he competed in the 3000 metres and won the gold medal in 1982 and finished sixth in 1984. At the 1986 European Championships Ilg came close to defending his title. However, he was overtaken on the final straight by Francesco Panetta (silver) and Hagen Melzer of the GDR (gold). In 1987 Ilg participated in the World Championships final in Rome but missed out on a medal. His time of 8:15.06 minutes from the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki remained his career best time.
