The National League West is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. This division was formed for the 1969 season when the National League expanded to 12 teams by adding the San Diego Padres and the Montreal Expos. For purpose of keeping a regular-season of 162 games, half of the teams were put into the new National League East, East Division and half into the new West Division. Within each division, the teams played 18 games each against their five division mates (90 games), and also 12 games against the teams in the opposite division (72 games), totaling 162 games. Geography Despite the geography, the owners of the Chicago Cubs insisted that their team be placed into the East Division along with the teams in New York City, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Cito Gaston
Clarence Edwin "Cito" Gaston (; born March 17, 1944) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder and manager. His major league career as a player lasted from 1967 to 1978, most notably with the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves. He spent his entire managerial career with the Toronto Blue Jays, becoming the first African-American manager in Major League Baseball history to win a World Series title. Cito Gaston managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1989 to 1997, then again from 2008 to 2010. Robert Barry Bonnell (born October 27, 1953) is an American former outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). After playing basketball and baseball for the Ohio State University (OSU), he played baseball for the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners between 1977 and 1986. Reginald Jerome Sanders (September 9, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama – January 27, 2002), was a Major League Baseball player. He played 26 games, mostly at first base, for the Detroit Tigers in 1974. Lavern Jack Pierce (June 2, 1949 – September 13, 2012) was an American professional baseball player. Pierce played in parts of three seasons in the majors from until with the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. He also played with the Nankai Hawks in Japan in 1977. Paulino Ortiz Casanova (December 21, 1941 – August 12, 2017) was a Cuban professional baseball player. He played as a catcher in Major League Baseball from 1965 to 1974 for the Washington Senators and Atlanta Braves. Minor league career Paul Casanova began his professional baseball career on January 1, when he was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Indians.
