1974 World Rowing Championships
The 1974 World Rowing Championships was the fourth World Rowing Championships. It was held from 4 to 8 September 1974 (for men) and from 29 August to 1 September 1974 (for women) on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event was significantly extended from the 1970 edition, with the addition of both women's and lightweight men's events. Six women boat classes were added, three lightweight men classes, plus quad scull for men, increasing the number of boat classes from seven in 1970 to seventeen in 1974. This was also the last World Championships held on a quadrennial cycle – from this point, World Championships were held annually. Rotsee
__NOTOC__ The Rotsee (previously known as Rootsee) is a natural rowing lake on the northern edge of Lucerne, Switzerland. It is regarded as one of the best rowing venues in the world. Description and location The lake and its surrounding area is used for local recreation. All of the lake frontage is a protected area. The lake formed through glacial processes and it is thought that the river Reuss flowed through this valley in between ice ages. There is no notable inflow and virtually no current. Nearby hills protect the lake from wind. It is long. These factors make it an ideal rowing venue and German-speaking rower refer to it as ''Göttersee'', which translates as "lake of the gods". The expression was coined at the 1962 World Rowing Championships by a Japanese rowing official. The Zug–Lucerne railway is located north of the lake. Jörg Landvoigt (born 23 March 1951) is a retired German rower Jörg Landvoigt and his twin brother Bernd were born in Brandenburg an der Havel, then in the German Democratic Republic. Their father was a boatman: their mother worked as a secretary. Jörg Landvoigt had his best achievements in the coxless pairs, rowing with his twin. Between 1974 and 1980 they won all but one of the 180 races in which they competed, including four world championships and two Olympics; they only lost once, to other twins, Yuri and Nikolay Pimenov. The Landvoigt brothers also won a bronze medal in the eights at the 1972 Olympics and a European title in coxless fours in 1973. Jörg is left-handed, whereas Bernd is right-handed.
