1974 WANFL Season
The 1974 WAFL season was the 90th season of the various incarnations of senior football in Perth and the forty-fourth as the "Western Australian National Football League". Max George (footballer)
Maxwell George (born 4 January 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in three states, for Fitzroy of the Victorian Football League (VFL), Swan Districts and Central District. George had a strong start to his VFL career, kicking five goals on his debut, against Essendon at VFL Park, setting a new club record. He followed it up with a four-goal haul when Fitzroy defeated Richmond the subsequent weekend and finished the year with 20 goals. Before arriving at Fitzroy for his single season stint, George played with Swans Districts in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1969 to 1975. A full-forward, he topped their goalkicking in 1969, 1973 and 1974. Fremantle Oval
Fremantle Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Fremantle Community Bank Oval, is a stadium in the centre of Fremantle, Western Australia, located on Parry Street. It currently has a capacity of 17,500 with terracing and a members area holding 750, though capacity was capped at 10,000 for Fremantle AFLW games. Fremantle Oval was originally used for cricket, but in 1895 hosted its first game of Australian rules football and Australian Football quickly became the main attraction leading to the development of the ground. It is located between the Fremantle Hospital, Fremantle Markets and the Fremantle Prison. South Fremantle Football Club train and play their home WAFL matches at the ground and are one of the few sporting organisations in Western Australia to own their club rooms freehold, rather than on a long-term lease. Brian Peake
Brian Francis Peake OAM (born 4 December 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played State of Origin football for Western Australia from 1978 to 1987, captaining the side in 1979, 1980, 1986 and 1987. Peake was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1990 and was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Mel Whinnen
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE (born 6 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions. He was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Peter Spencer (footballer)
Peter Spencer (born 11 January 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the East Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and North Melbourne Football Club, North Melbourne in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). He is a dual Sandover Medallist, winning the award in 1976 and 1984 and a triple F. D. Book Medallist (best and fairest at East Perth), winning the award 1975 WANFL season, in 1975, 1976 WANFL season, 1976 and 1984 WAFL season, 1984. Michael Clifford Fitzpatrick (born 28 January 1953) is an Australian businessman, sporting administrator and former professional Australian rules football player. He was chairman of the AFL Commission (football's governing body) from 2007 to 2017. Fitzpatrick was raised in Perth and began his football career with in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). A ruckman, he played 97 games for the club between 1970 and 1974, playing in a premiership team in 1973 and winning the club's best and fairest award in his last two seasons. Fitzpatrick transferred to the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the 1975 season and represented until his retirement at the end of the 1983 season. Geoff Blethyn
Geoffrey Russell Blethyn (born 28 October 1950) is a former leading Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Claremont in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) and Port Adelaide in the South Australian Football League (SANFL). Verdun Howell
Verdun John Howell (born 16 June 1937) is a former Australian rules footballer who played senior football in Tasmania and in the VFL (now AFL). Howell played with City-South from 1953 to 1957. He was a member of that club's 1954 and 1956 NTFA premiership teams and in 1957 won City's best and fairest award. Howell made his VFL debut with the St Kilda Football Club in 1958 after being signed from Tasmania in 1953. He initially played on the half forward line, then later as a half back before playing with the Saints as a full back, where he won the 1959 Brownlow Medal, tying with Bob Skilton. Tony Buhagiar
Anthony Francis "Tony" Buhagiar (born 3 October 1955) is a retired Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A pint-sized rover, he made his senior debut for West Australian National Football League club East Fremantle in the earlier 1970s as a free-spirited 16-year-old. By 1979 he had become a premiership player, represented Western Australia at state of origin and gained All-Australian selection. In 1981 he crossed the Nullarbor Plain and joined Victorian Football League club Essendon. Forfeit (sport)
In various sports, a forfeit is a method in which a match automatically ends, and the forfeiting team loses. There are two distinct forms of forfeiture. One occurs when a team is unable (or refuses) to meet the basic standards for playing the game, either before the game begins or as a result of actions that happen during the match. In such a case, the team not forfeiting wins the match. Another is ''punitive forfeiture'', in which a team has been found to have broken the rules of a sanctioning body during a match they have won and must have the results stricken from the record; whether or not the other team receives a win in such a case depends on the rules of that body and/or whether or not they were in compliance with the rules - if neither team was in compliance with the rules and/or the rules do not allow a losing team to be credited for a win in such a manner then the result is either a ''double forfeit'' and/or otherwise recorded as a loss for both teams.
