1974 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1974 New Zealand National Soccer League was the fifth season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Caversham finished last in the 1973 league and so contested a round-robin home and away play-off series with the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues (North Shore United, Waterside, and Christchurch Rangers respectively). With the exception of Shore's two big wins over the Wharfies of Wellington the matches were evenly contested, and it was those two performances which finally told. With three wins, two draws and a loss, North Shore United pipped Caversham by one point to enter the NZNSL for the first time. The New Zealand National League is the name given to the current New Zealand top football competition. Originally set up as the New Zealand National Soccer League there has been many versions of the competition as well as many different names. The most common format saw club teams play each other, at least two times, on a home and away basis. At the completion of those games, the best-performing team was declared as the New Zealand champion. The latest version has the clubs play in their regional leagues with the top teams qualifying for the Championship phase to then play each other for the champion. Wellington United AFC is an association football club based in Wellington, New Zealand, that competes in the Central League. History Wellington Diamond United Wellington Diamond United was the result of the merger of Diamond and Zealandia/Wellington United in 1968. Diamond was founded as a junior football club in 1893 by members of the Star Rugby Club, who wished to play football. It became a senior team in 1895. Zealandia was founded in 1954 by Dutch immigrants, changing its name to Wellington United in 1964. In 1968 the club played in the Central Region's Division One, finishing fourth out ten. Gisborne City AFC
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Five players were selected to participate in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Bay Olympic is an association football club based in New Lynn, Auckland, New Zealand. They currently compete in the Northern League. They have won the NRFL Premier League three times. History The club was formed from the merger of Blockhouse Bay (founded 1948) and Green Bay-Titirangi United (founded 1973) in 1998. A wooden spoon is an award that is given to an individual or team that has come last in a competition. Examples range from the academic to sporting and more frivolous events. The term is of British origin and has spread to other English-speaking countries. In most cases it is simply a colloquial term for coming last – there is no actual award given. Eastern Suburbs Association Football Club is a professional Association football club based in the suburb of Kohimarama in Auckland, New Zealand. The club competes in the Northern League. Alan Vest
Alan Vest (born 5 September 1939) is an English-born New Zealand former football player and manager from Barnsley, England. He currently resides in Perth, Australia. Biography Vest had a notable playing career, scoring on his full international debut for the All Whites in a 4–1 win over New Caledonia on 17 September 1972 and ended his international playing career with 17 A-international caps and 6 goals to his credit, his final cap being in a 0–0 draw with Iran on 12 August 1973. Vest first coached Rugby Town in the 1960s and then Rochdale United. It is in Australia where Vest has made his mark with the Yorkshire-man coaching NSL teams when they were at their peak in the 1970s.
