The 1974 New York gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 1974 to elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of New York. Incumbent Republican governor Malcolm Wilson, who had ascended to the governorship following Nelson Rockefeller's resignation to begin work with the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans in 1973, was defeated by Democratic Hugh Carey. Carey became the first Democratic Governor of New York since W. Averell Harriman left office in 1958 after suffering defeat from Nelson Rockefeller in the election that same year. Nelson Rockefeller
Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (July 8, 1908 – January 26, 1979), sometimes referred to by his nickname Rocky, was an American businessman and politician who served as the 41st vice president of the United States from 1974 to 1977. A member of the Republican Party and wealthy Rockefeller family, he previously served as the 49th governor of New York from 1959 to 1973. Anton "Tony" Chaitkin (born 1943) is an author, historian, and a former political activist with the LaRouche movement. He served as History Editor for ''Executive Intelligence Review''. Chaitkin's father was Jacob Chaitkin, who was the legal counsel and strategist for the boycott against Nazi Germany carried on by the American Jewish Congress in the 1930s. Activism Chaitkin became a founding member of the LaRouche movement in the mid-1960s. In 1973, Chaitkin was a candidate for Mayor of New York City, on the U.S. Labor Party ticket. Jerome Tuccille
Jerome Tuccille (May 30, 1937 – February 16, 2017) was an American writer and activist usually associated with the libertarian movement of American politics. In 1974, he ran for Governor of New York on the ticket of the Free Libertarian Party. His campaign included a publicity stunt where a blonde woman wearing a bodystocking rode a horse named "Taxpayer" through Central Park, alluding to the legend of Lady Godiva. He worked as an investment manager and authored more than thirty books, including '' It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand'' (). His other books included the first biography of Donald Trump, as well as biographies of Rupert Murdoch, Alan Greenspan, and the Hunts of Texas. The Commission on Critical Choices for Americans was a bipartisan working group proposed by President Richard Nixon and established at his behest in 1973 by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Its purpose was to examine the impact of rapid change upon American society and the place of the United States on the world stage. Hugh Leo Carey (April 11, 1919 – August 7, 2011) was an American politician and attorney. He was a seven-term U.S. representative from 1961 to 1974 and the 51st governor of New York from 1975 to 1982. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
