1974 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1974 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 87th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1974 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Galway led 1–4 to 0–5 at half-time with a Michael Rooney goal. Paddy Cullen saved a penalty kick (placed 17th in RTÉ's 2005 series '' Top 20 GAA Moments'') and Kevin Heffernan's Dublin staged a comeback to win by five points. The penalty save (Liam Sammon took it) occurred at the Canal End of Croke Park. It was Galway's second consecutive All-Ireland football final; they lost to Cork in 1973. Paddy Devlin, who had previously taken charge of the 1972 replay, was the last Tyrone man to referee an All-Ireland SFC final until Sean Hurson took charge of the 2022 final. The 1974 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 88th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 19 May 1974 and ended on 22 September 1974. Cork were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final. On 22 September 1974, Dublin won the championship following a 0–14 to 1–6 defeat of Galway in the All-Ireland final. This was their 18th All-Ireland title, their first in eleven championship seasons. Dublin's Jimmy Keaveney was the championship's top scorer with 1–36. Dublin manager Kevin Heffernan was the choice for Texaco Footballer of the Year, the first time that the award went to a manager instead of a player. The 2022 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 135th final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in Gaelic football, the culmination of the 2022 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The match was played at Croke Park in Dublin on 24 July 2022. This was the earliest in the year that the final has ever taken place. Munster champions Kerry took on Connacht champions Galway. It was the eighth time the teams had met in the final; Galway won the first encounter in a final replay in 1938. Sean Hurson
Sean Hurson is a Gaelic football referee. He is a member of the Galbally Parses club in County Tyrone. He was appointed to referee the 2022 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final, becoming the first Tyrone man to do so since Paddy Devlin oversaw the 1974 final. Career Hurson began refereeing in 2008. The coin that is used by Hurson, in the coin toss between the two captains at the beginning of each of Hurson's games, is a one pound coin engraved with Hurson's initials. It was presented to him by a former umpire of his, Dermot McCaffrey, the week before McCaffrey died in February 2019. McCaffrey advised Hurson that he would be there in spirit for the coin toss if he used it. That coin is kept by Hurson's umpires and used before every game in McCaffrey's memory.
