1973 USA Outdoor Track And Field Championships
The 1973 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships men's competition took place between June 15–17 at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, California. This was Bakersfield's third and last time to host the men's division in a sequence every three years since 1967. At this time, Memorial Stadium still had a finely crushed brick surface, the last time the championships was held on a dirt track. They would host the women's division the following year, as they had in 1971. This was also the last time the men's division would compete at imperial distances (though the women would continue for another year). The women's division held their championships separately a little over a hundred fifty miles south at Anteater Stadium on the campus of University of California, Irvine in Irvine, California. Mark Lutz (athlete)
Mark Edward Lutz (born December 23, 1951 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is an American former sprinter. He ran for his home country in the 200 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics, finishing 5th in his qualifying heat. Biography Lutz studied at the University of Kansas where he was a key member of the Kansas Jayhawks track team between 1971 and 1974. Martin Liquori
Martin William Liquori (born September 11, 1949) is a retired American middle distance athlete. Liquori rose to fame when he became the third American high schooler to break the four-minute mile by running a 3:59.8 in 1967, three years after Jim Ryun first did it. He grew up in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and attended Essex Catholic High School. After high school, Liquori enrolled at Villanova University. There he was coached by Jumbo Elliott. Liquori made the U.S. Olympic team in 1968 as a nineteen-year-old freshman. He reached the finals of the 1,500 meter run but suffered a stress fracture and finished 12th. He was the youngest person ever to compete in the final. In 1969, he finished second to Ryun in the NCAA indoor mile, then won the NCAA and AAU outdoor mile championships by turning the tables on Ryun and beating him. He repeated the AAU outdoor in 1970 and had his best year in 1971, winning the NCAA and AAU outdoor titles, and a gold medal in the 1,500 m at the Pan ...
