Suriname Progressive People's Party
The Progressive Surinamese People's Party ( nl, Progressieve Surinaamse Volkspartij, PSV) was a political party in Suriname. The party was a member of the Christian Democrat Organization of America. The party was founded in August 1946 by, among others, Father Jozef Weidmann and Coen Ooft. In 1948, party member , on behalf of the PSV, went to the First Round Table Conference in the Netherlands, where he pleaded for universal suffrage for men and women. One of the results of this conference was that the census and capacity selection right for men was replaced by a universal suffrage for men and women. In 1955 three PSV politicians were elected and soon after that two members of the PSV became minister: Willem Smit (Finance) and Lucien Rens (Education and Community Development). Rens was in 1957 succeeded by Julius Johan Jacques Volkerts. After the elections of 1969 the PSV politician Rudi Vonsée became the Minister of Health. Elections In Suriname
Suriname elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by an electoral college based on the parliament. The National Assembly (''Nationale Assemblée'') has 51 members, elected every five years by proportional representation per district. Brotherhood and Unity in Politics ( nl, Broederschap en Eenheid in de Politiek) is a political party in Suriname founded on 29 April 1973. History It was originally founded as the Bush Negro Unity Party ( nl, Bosnegers Eenheid Partij) to represent the Maroon community in interior areas of the country and was renamed in 1987. It turned its focus away from the promotion of a specific ethnicity's interests, although it still enjoys popularity among the Maroon community. The party did not participate in the elections of 1987, because the Surinamese Interior War made it difficult to access their members in the interior. The Progressive National Party ( nl, Progressieve Nationale Partij, PNP) was a political party in Suriname. The party was founded in January 1967 by Just Rens, a former member of the parliament and Minister of Construction on behalf of the National Party of Suriname, who was fired after a conflict with the party.
