1973 England Rugby Union Tour Of Fiji And New Zealand
The 1973 England rugby union tour of Fiji and New Zealand was a series of matches played by the England national rugby union team in Fiji and New Zealand in August and September 1973. England played five games, including a test match against the New Zealand national rugby union team and a match against the Fiji national rugby union team for which England did not award full international caps. England beat Fiji by only a single point and lost all three matches against New Zealand provincial teams but completed the tour with their first win against New Zealand since 1936. This tour was hastily organised when a planned tour of Argentina was cancelled due to terrorist threats against the players. A squad of 25 was selected, all but three capped, and nine of whom (six in the pack) had played in the match against the All Blacks at Twickenham nine months previously, in January 1973. The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Peter Squires (sportsman)
Peter John Squires (born ) is an English former rugby union player and a first-class cricketer, who played in forty nine first-class matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1972 and 1976. Squires was born 4 August 1951 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England. He was educated at both Ripon Grammar School and York St John University. Despite his healthy number of appearances, this right-handed opening batsman found runs hard to come by, scoring 1,271 at an average of 16.72, with a best score of 70. He was no more prolific in his fifty six List A one day matches from 1971 to 1976, making 708 runs at 16.46 with a top score of 79 not out. The only ball he bowled in one day cricket went to the boundary, and his 6.2 overs in first-class cricket cost 32 runs without success. Squires took fourteen first-class catches. Jeremy Paul Aubrey George Janion (born ) was a rugby union international wing who represented England in twelve matches between 1971 and 1975. Janion was educated at St. Edmund's College, Ware. Blackheath Football Club is a rugby union club based in Well Hall, Eltham in south-east London. The club was founded in Blackheath in 1858, and is the fourth-oldest rugby club in continuous existence in the world, after Dublin University Football Club (1854), Liverpool St Helens F.C. Anthony Mervyn Jorden (28 January 1947 – 20 October 2023) was an English sportsman who played international rugby union for England and first-class cricket. Education Jorden attended Monmouth School before going up to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he represented the university at both rugby union and cricket. Cricket career Jorden began playing cricket for the Essex Second XI in 1964 and two years later broke into their County Championship side for the first time. A right-arm fast-medium bowler, he went on to take a total of 117 first-class wickets for Essex, at an average of 29.92. From 1968 until 1970, he proved to be a capable wicket-taker for Cambridge University as well, with 57 first-class wickets at 31.66. Peter Rossborough (born 30 June 1948) is a former a rugby union international who represented England from 1971 to 1975. He played club rugby for Coventry R.F.C. during the 1970s. Personal life A native of Coventry, Rossborough attended King Henry VIII School and played rugby for his school. He studied at Durham University, where he played for the university rugby team, graduating in 1971. Rossborough was for many years a teacher by profession, teaching English and French at Woodlands Comprehensive School, and reached the position of headmaster at Ashlawn School. Bristol Bears (officially Bristol Rugby Club or Bristol Rugby) are a professional rugby union club based in Bristol, England. They play in Premiership Rugby, England's top division of rugby.
