1973 Denver Broncos Season
The 1973 Denver Broncos season was the team's 14th year in professional football and its fourth with the National Football League (NFL). Led by second-year head coach and general manager John Ralston, the Broncos posted a winning record for the first time in franchise history, with seven wins, five losses, and two ties, which tied for sixth-best in the conference. Denver tied for second in the AFC West (third with tiebreaker), 1½ games behind the Oakland Raiders. One of the ties, in their first-ever game with the Cardinals, was the nearest they came to losing to that franchise until 2010, and also their only NFL appearance in St. Louis until 2000 against the relocated Rams at Edward Jones Dome. The American Football Conference – Western Division or AFC West is one of the four divisions of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The division comprises the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers. Barney Lewis Chavous ( ; born March 22, 1951) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted in the second round (36th overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos after playing college football for South Carolina State University. He was selected by the Associated Press as a first-team defensive end on the 1972 Little All-America college football team. He played his entire NFL career with the Broncos from 1973-1985. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. The 1972 Louisville Cardinals football team represented the University of Louisville in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) during the 1972 NCAA University Division football season. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. Tom Jackson (American Football, Born 1951)
Thomas Louie Jackson, also referred to as "TJ" or "Tommy", (born April 4, 1951) is a former American football linebacker who played professionally for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL) from 1973 to 1986. He was member of Denver's "Orange Crush Defense" and helped lead the Broncos to the AFC Championship in 1977 and 1986 . The 1972 LSU Tigers football team represented Louisiana State University during the 1972 NCAA University Division football season. LSU and Southeastern Conference rival Ole Miss became the last major universities to desegregate their varsity football squads this season. The Sept. 30 game vs. Wisconsin marked the first appearance of a Big Ten Conference team at Tiger Stadium. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach. The 1972 BYU Cougars football team represented Brigham Young University (BYU) for the 1972 NCAA University Division football season. It was their first year under head coach LaVell Edwards and the Cougars finished over .500 for the first time since 1969.
