1973 Australia Rugby Union Tour Of England And Wales
The 1973 Australia rugby union tour of Europe was a series of nine matches played by the Australia national rugby union team (the Wallabies) in England and Wales in October and November 1973. The Wallabies won only of three of their matches, lost five and drew the other one; they lost both of their international matches, against Wales and England. Australia National Rugby Union Team
The Australia national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is the representative national team in the sport of rugby union for the nation of Australia. The team first played at Sydney in 1899, winning their first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia have competed in all nine Rugby World Cups, winning the final on two occasions and also finishing as runner-up twice. Australia beat England at Twickenham in the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup and won again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when their opponents in the final were France. The Wallabies also compete annually in The Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri-Nations), along with southern hemisphere counterparts Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. Russell Fairfax
Russell Lance Fairfax (born 29 March 1952, Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian former Rugby Union and Rugby League player. A precocious talent, he played his first rugby international while still at school. Having played eight tests for the Wallabies, he moved to Rugby League's Eastern Suburbs Roosters in 1974. Following his retirement from Rugby League, Fairfax coached in the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Early life Russell Fairfax, whose father was in the Australian Army, grew up in Sorrento, Victoria, where he played Australian football. The family moved to Ipswich, Queensland, where he played rugby league, before moving to Sydney. Tony Shaw (rugby Union)
Anthony Alexander Shaw is an Australian former rugby union player. A Queensland state and national representative flanker, Shaw captained the national side consistently from 1978 to 1981. Early life and style Tony Shaw was born 23 March 1953 in Brisbane, Queensland. His early rugby was played at St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace in Brisbane. He was a proficient water-polo player and represented for Queensland in that sport. Shaw's greatest rugby success was achieved at flanker, he was a hard driving forward who lead from the front and was an outstanding rucker and mauler. John Leslie Patrick "Jake" Howard (30 August 194511 December 2015) was an international rugby footballer who played prop for Australia. Garrick Fay (b. 11 April 1948 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian businessman and former international rugby player. Garrick was a member of the Australian national team from 1971-79. Geoffrey Arnold Shaw (born 27 December 1948) is an Australian former national representative rugby union player who played for and captained the Wallabies. He made state representative appearances for both New South Wales and Queensland over an eleven-year period from 1969. Rugby career From the Illawarra region as a nineteen-year-old Shaw first represented for New South Wales Country against New Zealand in 1968. The following year he debuted for Australia in a Test match against Wales. In that same year 1969, Shaw was selected to tour with the Wallabies on the 1969 Australia rugby union tour of South Africa. Peter George Rowles (born 18 November 1952) is an Australian former rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. In union he represented Australia and in league he played in the NSWRFL Premiership for the Western Suburbs and Newtown clubs. Jeff McLean (rugby Player)
Jeffrey James McLean (26 January 1947 — 6 August 2010) was an Australian rugby union international. McLean is the grandson of dual-code international Doug McLean and elder brother of Wallabies fly-half/fullback Paul McLean. Two uncles and a cousin were also capped for the Wallabies. Born in Ipswich, Queensland, McLean attended St Edmund's College, Ipswich and growing up primarily competed in athletics. A member of the Mayne Harriers Athletics Club, McLean specialised in sprint races, with his 10.4 second effort in the 100 metres earning him selection for the Commonwealth Games trials. McLean, a winger, began his rugby career with Brothers Old Boys and was soon chosen to make his representative debut for Queensland. Owen George Stephens (born 9 January 1947), also known by the nickname of "Noddy", is a New Zealand former rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s.
