1972–73 S.L. Benfica Season
The 1972–73 season was S.L. Benfica, Sport Lisboa e Benfica's List of S.L. Benfica seasons, 69th season in existence and the club's Primeira Liga#All-time Primeira Liga table, 39th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football, covering the period from 1 July 1972 to 30 June 1973. Benfica competed domestically in the 1972–73 Primeira Divisão, Primeira Divisão and the 1972–73 Taça de Portugal, Taça de Portugal, and participated in the 1972–73 European Cup, European Cup after winning the 1971–72 Primeira Divisão, previous league. Duarte Borges Coutinho
Duarte António Borges Coutinho, 4th Marquess of Praia e Monforte (18 November 1921 – 19 May 1981), commonly known simply as Borges Coutinho, was the 26th president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. Born in Lisbon and educated both in England and Portugal, Borges Coutinho became a member of Benfica in 1959, aged 37. Ten years later, he became president of the club after defeating candidates Fernando Martins and Romão Martins in the elections on 12 April 1969, with 58 percent of the votes. During his eight-year presidency (four consecutive biennal terms), the football team won seven Primeira Liga titles (personal record) – one of them without defeat, in the 1972–73 campaign – and three Taça de Portugal trophies. Augusto Matine
Augusto Matine (13 February 1947 – 13 October 2020) was a Portuguese footballer and manager who played as a midfielder mostly for Benfica and Vitória de Setúbal at club level and nine times for the Portugal national team. Most notably, he managed the Mozambique national team. Club career Born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Matine, a midfielder, joined Benfica in Lisbon from Central de Lourenço Marques in 1967. After playing two seasons for Benfica's main squad, with whom he won the 1969–70 Taça de Portugal and the 1970–71 Primeira Divisão, he spent one year on loan at Vitória de Setúbal. He returned to Benfica the next season and won the 1972–73 Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Honra before leaving permanently to Vitória de Setúbal, where he would play from 1973 to 1976. Sporting Clube de Portugal, founded Sporting Club de Portugal (), otherwise referred to as Sporting CP, often known abroad as Sporting Lisbon , is a Portuguese professional sports club based in Lisbon. Brazil Independence Cup
The Brazil Independence Cup was an international football tournament held in Brazil, from 11 June to 9 July 1972, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Brazilian Declaration of Independence. It was called the ''Minicopa'' by the Brazilians and the final was between Brazil and Portugal, in the Maracanã Stadium. Brazil won 1–0, with Jairzinho scoring in the 89th minute. Brazil no longer had Pelé but still had Tostão, Jairzinho and Rivelino, the later two also played in the 1974 FIFA World Cup, in West Germany. Despite Portugal's quality results and team, including Benfica players such as Eusébio, Jaime Graça, José Henrique, Humberto Coelho, Rui Jordão, and Toni, the team missed the World Cup 1974 and 1978 qualifying matches, so this tournament was their best result until the 1984 European Football Championship. Fernando Cabrita
Fernando da Silva Cabrita (1 May 1923 – 22 September 2014) was a Portuguese football forward and manager. He amassed Primeira Liga totals of 295 games and 88 goals over the course of 14 seasons, in representation of Olhanense and Sporting da Covilhã. Subsequently, he went on to have a coaching career that lasted more than two decades, and included spells with Benfica and the Portugal national team. Club career Born in Lagos, Algarve, Cabrita played 14 of his 18 years as a senior in his country's top division, starting out at S.C. Olhanense. The European Golden Shoe, also known as European Golden Boot, is an award that is presented each season to the leading goalscorer in league matches from the top division of a European national league. Estádio Das Antas
The Estádio das Antas (officially Estádio do Futebol Clube do Porto) was the third (and longest occupied) stadium of the Portuguese football side FC Porto. It was in use from 1952 to 2004, replacing the earlier Campo da Constituição, 1.6km (1 mile) to the west, and later replaced by the Estádio do Dragão, a block southeast away. As well as the stadium, it had an indoor arena and three training grounds. The club's offices were also split between the inside of the stadium and the ''Torre das Antas'', built in front of the stadium during the 1990s. It was demolished in 2004, although one floodlight still remains, and the majority of the site is not yet redeveloped. Layout The stadium was split into six different areas.
