1972 WANFL Season
The 1972 WANFL season was the 88th season of the various incarnations of the Western Australian National Football League. It saw East Perth, after five Grand Final losses in six seasons and a frustrating seven since their last premiership in 1959, break the drought against a Claremont team that had achieved its first minor premiership since Johnny Leonard’s days, despite kicking into the wind after winning the toss. The St Kilda Football Club, nicknamed the Saints, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Victoria. Graham Moss
Graham Frank Moss (born 14 May 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). A Legend in the West Australian Football Hall of Fame, Moss is recognized as one of the finest ruckmen of his era, winning the Brownlow Medal and then returning to Western Australia, eventually captain-coaching Claremont to the 1981 premiership. After finishing his on-field career, Moss became a respected football administrator, most notably serving as the inaugural chief executive officer of the West Coast Eagles. Bill Walker (Australian Footballer, Born 1942)
William Herbert John Walker (born 23 February 1942 in Huntly, New Zealand) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). He was the winner of the 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1970 Sandover Medals. Career Born in Huntly, New Zealand, Walker grew up in the wheatbelt town of Narembeen. Despite being regarded as perhaps the best country prospect in Western Australia in 1960, Walker’s father thought him too small to be successful at WANFL football. Once all eight WANFL clubs showed interest in him his father suggested Walker (who barracked for as a boy) should sign with Swan Districts – who underwent a major recruiting program over the 1960-61 off-season alongside the signing of Haydn Bunton junior as captain-coach. Bob Beecroft
Robert James Beecroft (born 11 January 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Swan Districts Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Beecroft made his debut with Swan Districts in 1970, playing 126 games as a ruckman, being named All Australian for his performance in the 1972 Perth Carnival and the Swan's Best and Fairest award. He played for Western Australia three years later and was recruited by Fitzroy for the following season. As a key forward for the Lions, Beecroft topped their goalkicking list four times with a best of 87 goals in 1979 which was at the time a club record. Mel Whinnen
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE (born 6 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions. He was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Mike Fitzpatrick (footballer)
Michael Clifford Fitzpatrick (born 28 January 1953) is an Australian businessman, sporting administrator and former professional Australian rules football player. He was chairman of the AFL Commission (football's governing body) from 2007 to 2017. Fitzpatrick was raised in Perth and began his football career with in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). A ruckman, he played 97 games for the club between 1970 and 1974, playing in a premiership team in 1973 and winning the club's best and fairest award in his last two seasons. Fitzpatrick transferred to the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the 1975 season and represented until his retirement at the end of the 1983 season. East Fremantle Oval (known under a sponsorship agreement as New Choice Homes Park and nicknamed "Shark Park",) is an Australian rules football ground located in East Fremantle, Western Australia. Claremont Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Revo Fitness Stadium, is an Australian rules football stadium located in Perth, Western Australia. The stadium, opened in as "Claremont Recreation Ground", seats . It is the home of the Claremont Football Club, an Australian rules football club that plays in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL), the state's premier Australian rules competition. Before 1925, the stadium served as a cricket and soccer ground, with no fence, native bush on the eastern side, near the Claremont Showground, and the remaining area a sandy wasteland.
