1972 North American Soccer League Season
Statistics of North American Soccer League in season 1972. This was the 5th season of the NASL. Overview Eight teams took part in the league with the New York Cosmos winning the championship. Changes from previous season Rules changes The league changed its offside rule during the season on June 26. They created a "Blue Line" which was an offside line across the field, 35 yards from the goal line. Thereafter, no player could be offside unless he had crossed the 35-yard line. This made the NASL unique in the soccer world; the league received temporary approval for the change from FIFA on an experimental basis only. The league also switched the playoff format to single-match elimination contests rather than series. In many team sports which involve scoring goals, the goalkeeper (sometimes termed goaltender, netminder, GK, goalie or keeper) is a designated player charged with directly preventing the opposing team from scoring by blocking or intercepting opposing shots on goal. Willie Evans (21 November 1939 – c. 2014) was a Ghanaian footballer who played at both professional and international levels as a defender. Career Professional Evans played professional soccer in the United States, competing in the NPSL, NASL and ASL for the Atlanta Chiefs, the Washington Darts, and the Miami Toros. He was named to the 1969 ASL All-Star Team. Peter Short (footballer)
Peter Short (27 October 1944 – 22 February 1984) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender and a forward. Active in the United States and Canada, Short made over 150 appearances in a career lasting 11 seasons. Career Born in Liverpool, Short played professionally in the United States and Canada for the Philadelphia Spartans, the Cleveland Stokers, the Dallas Tornado, the Rochester Lancers, the Denver Dynamos, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Minnesota Kicks. In 1966, he played in the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League with Toronto Italia Falcons. After the conclusion of the ECPSL season he played in the American Soccer League with Newark Ukrainian Sitch. Clive Charles
Clive Michael Charles (3 October 1951 – 26 August 2003) was an English football player, coach and television announcer. He was one of five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) coaches to win more than 400 games. Born in Dagenham, Essex to Grenadan immigrants, Charles began his career with West Ham United, where his brother John Charles played. In 1978, he began playing professionally in the United States with the NASL Portland Timbers. He spent the last years of his career playing in the Major Indoor Soccer League, first with the Pittsburgh Spirits, then with the Los Angeles Lazers. Charles spent his later life in the United States, coaching at the high school, collegiate and international levels in the Portland, Oregon area, primarily at Reynolds High School and the University of Portland. John David Sewell (7 July 1936 – 19 November 2021) was an English professional footballer who had a long career in the Football League, before continuing as player and coach in the North American Soccer League (NASL) during the 1970s. Nicknamed "The Duke" for his good dress sense, Sewell also had the distinction of never having been booked during his English playing career and only once throughout his entire playing career. A well-rounded young athlete, Sewell played fly-half at rugby so well that he was twice selected to play for England Schools’ Under 15 team. Richard Hall (born 3 July 1945) is a former professional footballer who played as a defender. He played seven seasons with the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League. Born in England, he earned four caps with the United States national team between 1973 and 1975. He later coached high school boys soccer in Dallas, Texas. Club career In 1970 Hall moved to the U.S. from England and signed with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He spent the next seven seasons in Dallas. In 1971 the Tornado won the NASL championship as Hall was named a first team All Star.
