1972 French Open – Women's Singles
Billie Jean King defeated the defending champion Evonne Goolagong in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the women's singles title at the 1972 French Open. With the win, she completed the career Grand Slam in singles. The French Lawn Tennis Federation halved the size of the draw from 64 to 32 players in an attempt to attract the top players on tour to the tournament; this change was reverted the following year as results were mixed. Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 major titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at age 29, she won the " Battle of the Sexes" tennis match against the 55-year-old Bobby Riggs. King was also the founder of the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation. Kerry Melville Reid (née Melville; born 7 August 1947) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. During her 17-year career, Reid won one Grand Slam singles title and 26 other singles titles and was the runner-up in 40 singles tournaments. Reid was included in the year-end world top-ten rankings for 12 consecutive years (1968–1979). She won at least one tournament annually from 1966 through 1979, except for 1975. Wendy Gilchrist (born 17 May 1950) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. From 1972 she competed as Wendy Paish following her marriage to British Davis Cup player John Paish. Karen Krantzcke
Karen Krantzcke (1 February 1946 – 11 April 1977) was an Australian tennis player. She achieved a world top ten singles ranking in 1970. In her short career, she made the quarterfinals or better at each of the four Grand Slam championships in both singles and doubles. She also won the Australian Open in doubles, and assisted Australia to victory in the Federation Cup. At the age of 31, Krantzcke died from a heart attack while jogging. Nathalie Fuchs
Nathalie Fuchs (born 3 September 1952) is a French former professional tennis player. A right-handed player from Paris, Fuchs competed on the professional tour in the 1970s. She was the winner of the 1974 Spanish Championships and played 11 ties for the France Federation Cup team. Fuchs made the third round of the French Open on three occasions, including in 1974 when she had an upset win over second seed Virginia Wade. She also partnered with Wanaro N'Godrella in the mixed doubles event in 1974 and reached the semi-finals, which was her best grand slam performance. In the 1975 Federation Cup she remained unbeaten in her singles rubbers up until France's semi-final loss to Czechoslovakia. She had played an important role in the quarter-final win over Great Britain, with her victory against Sue Barker levelling the tie, which was won by France in the doubles. Sonja Pachta (born 25 April 1941) is an Austrian former tennis player. Pachta, a 19-time national singles champion, was active on tour from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Frances Ellen 'Nell' Truman Robinson (12 December 1945 – 8 April 2012), was a female tennis player from the United Kingdom who was active in the 1960s and early 1970s and was mainly known for her performance as a doubles player. Nell Truman was born on 12 December 1945 in Loughton, England, the youngest child of Stanley and Aimee Truman. Her father was a chartered accountant. She was the sister of tennis player Christine Truman. She attended Queen Anne's School in Caversham, Berkshire, and went on to read geography at St Anne's College, Oxford, where she was awarded blues in tennis and squash. Judy Tegart-Dalton
Judy Tegart Dalton (née Tegart; born 12 December 1937) is an Australian former professional tennis player. She won nine major doubles titles, and completed the career Grand Slam in women's doubles. Five of her doubles titles were with Margaret Court. Tegart was also a runner-up in 10 major doubles tournaments. Career Tegart reached the final at Wimbledon in 1968, where she lost to Billie Jean King in two tight sets after defeating second-seeded Court in the quarterfinal and third-seeded Nancy Richey in the semifinal.
