1972 European Figure Skating Championships
The 1972 European Figure Skating Championships was a senior-level international competition held at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden on January 11–15. Elite senior-level figure skaters from European ISU member nations competed for the title of European Champion in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. Overview The 1970 European bronze medalist, Günter Zöller, arrived in Gothenburg with the East German team but withdrew before the start of the event after going to the West German embassy to defect. In the men's event, the top three after the compulsory figures held their placements for the medals. Ondrej Nepela completed triple salchow and toe loop jumps and finished first ahead of Sergei Chetverukhin, who skated with power, flow, and elegance but fell on a triple salchow attempt. Günter Zöller
Günter Zöller (born 21 May 1948) is a German figure skating coach and former competitor for East Germany. He is the 1970 World bronze medalist, the 1970 European bronze medalist, a five-time Blue Swords champion, and a five-time East German national champion. Personal life Günter Zöller was born 21 May 1948 in Chemnitz. Career Zöller began figure skating as a child. Coached by Jutta Müller, he represented the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and East Germany. Zöller debuted at the European Championships in 1963 and finished 19th. In 1965, he won his first East German national title and was sent to the 1965 European Championships, where he placed 12th. He then competed at his first World Championships, placing 18th. In 1967, after winning his second national title, Zöller advanced to seventh at Europeans and 11th at Worlds. Janet Anne Sawbridge (1947 – 5 March 2021) was a British ice dancer and figure skating coach. Partnered with David Hickinbottom, she won bronze at the 1964 World Figure Skating Championships and silver at the 1965 World Figure Skating Championships. Partnered with Jon Lane, she won bronze at the 1968 World Figure Skating Championships. Aleksandr Gorshkov (figure Skater)
Aleksandr Georgievich Gorshkov (russian: link=no, Александр Георгиевич Горшков, 8 October 1946 – 17 November 2022) was an ice dancer who competed internationally for the Soviet Union. With his wife Lyudmila Pakhomova, he was the 1976 Olympic champion. They were six-time World Champions (1970–74, 1976), as well as six-time European champions (1970–71, 1973–76), which makes them the most decorated of all-time at both events in the pair discipline. From 2010, Gorshkov was the president of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FFKKR). Life and career Gorshkov was born on 8 October 1946. Lyudmila Pakhomova
Lyudmila Alekseyevna Pakhomova (russian: Людмила Алексеевна Пахомова; 31 December 1946 – 17 May 1986) was an ice dancer who competed for the Soviet Union. With her husband Alexandr Gorshkov, she was the 1976 Olympic champion, one of the oldest female figure skating Olympic champions. They are six-time World Champions (1970-74, 1976), as well as six-time European champions (1970-71, 1973-76), which makes them the most decorated of all-time at both events in the pair discipline. Uwe Kagelmann
Uwe Kagelmann (born 6 September 1950 in Dresden, Saxony, East Germany/GDR) is a German former competitive pair skater. Competing with Manuela Groß, he was twice bronze medalist at the Olympics. He later became a figure skating coach. The pair skated for the SV Dynamo club and represented East Germany. Their coach was Heinz-Friedrich Lindner. He now works as a figure skating coach at the Feldkircher Eislauf Verein Montfort club in Austria. Manuela Groß
Manuela Manja Groß (later Leupold, born 29 January 1957 in East Berlin, East Germany) is a German former competitive pair skater. With partner Uwe Kagelmann, she is a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, and she is the youngest female figure skating Olympic medalist. She turned 15 just four days before the opening of the 1972 Winter Olympics, held in Sapporo, Japan, where she won her first bronze medal in pairs skating. Groß began figure skating in Berlin. She was paired with Uwe Kagelmann. They skated for the SC Dynamo Berlin club representing East Germany. Their coach was Heinz-Friedrich Lindner. Andrei Alexandrovich Suraikin (russian: Андрей Александрович Сурайкин; 20 October 1948 -28 September 1996) was a Russian pair skater. With partner Liudmila Smirnova, he was the 1972 Olympic silver medalist. Career Suraikin began figure skating in 1957 and became a member of the USSR National Team in 1968. He trained at Spartak in Leningrad. Suraikin competed with Liudmila Smirnova, coached by Maya Belenkaya. Smirnova and Suraikin won the silver medal at the 1972 Winter Olympics. Liudmila Smirnova
Lyudmila Stanislavovna Smirnova (russian: Людмила Станиславовна Смирнова; born July 21, 1949, in Leningrad) is a retired pair skater who competed for the Soviet Union. With partner Andrei Suraikin, she is the 1972 Winter Olympic silver medalist. With her then-husband Alexei Ulanov, she is a two-time World silver medalist. Career Smirnova began figure skating in 1955 and became a member of the USSR National Team in 1968. She trained in Leningrad at Spartak and competed initially with Suraikin. Sonja Morgenstern
Sonja Morgenstern (born 22 January 1955) is a German figure skating coach and former competitor. Morgenstern was coached by Jutta Müller in Chemnitz and represented the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt club and East Germany ( GDR). In 1966 she won the Spartakiade in figure skating. Two years later she participated in the Winter Olympics. Her biggest success was winning the bronze medal at the European Figure Skating Championships in 1972. In the same year, she placed sixth at the Winter Olympics. Her main East German rival was Christine Errath. In 1973 Morgenstern ended her figure skating career as a result of injuries.
