1972 England Rugby Union Tour Of South Africa
This first tour undertaken by England to South Africa was organised with a demanding schedule, although with only one Test Match. Within two weeks and three days, seven matches were to be played, the first four at sea level, and the final three, including the Test Match, at the altitude in the highveld with only two days to acclimatise before a demanding fixture against Northern Transvaal. From the outset, under captain John Pullin and the management of Alec Lewis and John Elders, there was a buoyant and optimistic spirit in the squad, as if they were determined to erase the memories of the last few seasons of undistinguished English performances. The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Dawie Snyman
Dawid Stefanus Lubbe Snyman (born 5 July 1949) is a former South African rugby union player and coach. Playing career Snyman represented the Free State schools at two consecutive Craven Week tournaments. After school and completing his military training he enrolled at Stellenbosch University. In 1971, before playing provincial rugby, he was selected for the Springboks to tour Australia. Although he did not play in any test matches during the tour, being selected for the team made him only the third player, after JC van der Westhuizen and Danie Craven to represent the Springboks before playing for a province. He made his provincial debut for Western Province later during the 1971 season. Snyman's test debut was in 1972 at Ellis Park against the touring English side captained by John Pullin. Jan Webster
Jan Godfrey Webster (24 August 1946 — 5 February 2019) was an English rugby union international. Webster was born in Southport but his family would soon move to Walsall. He attended Queen Mary's Grammar School and had ambitions to became a footballer until the age of 14, when an approach from Aston Villa manager Joe Mercer was turned down by his headmaster. His early rugby was played with Walsall RFC. A scrum-half, Webster was capped 11 times for England in the early 1970s and is noted for his performances in two historic overseas victories. He was England's scrum-half in the country's first ever away win over the Springboks in 1972, as well as for the defeat of the All Blacks at Eden Park in 1973, which was the first win in New Zealand by a home nation. Alan Gerald Bernard Old (born 23 September 1945) is an English rugby union player who had 16 caps for England. Old was an undergraduate at Queen Mary College and later studied for a year at Durham University, where he competed for Durham University RFC. In 1970 he was selected for North-Eastern Counties in their match against South Africa at Gosforth, part of the controversial 1969–70 South Africa rugby union tour of Britain and Ireland. He made his debut for England against Wales in 1972 and made a further 15 appearances with his final one being against France in 1978. Gert Hendrik Muller (born 10 May 1948) is a former South African rugby union player. Joachim Scholtz 'Joggie' Jansen (born 5 February 1948) is a former South African rugby union player. Playing career In 1964 as a sixteen-year-old, Jansen played for at the first ever Craven Week tournament. After school he went to the University of the Free State and played provincial rugby for and was a member of the Free State team that won the Currie Cup in 1976. Jansen made his test debut for the Springboks in 1970 against New Zealand at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and played in all four tests during the series against the touring All Blacks. Jeremy Paul Aubrey George Janion (born ) was a rugby union international wing who represented England in twelve matches between 1971 and 1975. Janion was educated at St. Edmund's College, Ware.
