1972 Dallas Cowboys Season
The 1972 Dallas Cowboys season was their 13th in the league. The team failed to improve their previous output of 11–3, winning ten games. They qualified for the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season but settled for the wildcard spot. A pre-season injury to quarterback Roger Staubach and the trade of Duane Thomas (both had been integral figures in the 1971 championship team) hindered the offense (mitigated somewhat since their replacements, Craig Morton and Calvin Hill, were former starters). In the divisional playoff round, Staubach came off the bench to engineer an improbable 30–28 comeback win over the 49ers (Dallas had trailed by 28–16 with less than 2 minutes to play). NFC East
The National Football Conference – Eastern Division or NFC East is one of the four Division (sport), divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). John Babinecz
John Michael Babinecz (born July 27, 1950) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Oilers and Chicago Bears. He also was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. He played college football at Villanova University. Early years Babinecz attended Central Catholic High School where he played as a tight end and linebacker, receiving All-Catholic honors in his last two years. He also was the State Catholic champion in the shot put. He is of Polish descent. He accepted a football scholarship from Villanova University, where he became a three-year starter and a three-time All-East selection at middle linebacker. Robert West (American Football)
Robert Harold West (born October 3, 1950) is a former American football wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. He played college football at San Diego State University. Early years West attended Lincoln High School, before moving on to San Diego State University, where he played under head coach Don Coryell and was a three-year starter at wide receiver. In 1971, he set a school record for the longest pass play when he caught a 92-yard pass from quarterback Brian Sipe, while playing against Fresno State University. Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern Michigan Wildcats are the athletic teams that represent Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette, Michigan, in NCAA intercollegiate sporting competitions. All teams that play under NCAA governance compete at the Division II level, with three exceptions. The most significant one is the men's ice hockey program, which plays at the Division I level. Two other sports, Nordic skiing (a coeducational sport with separate men's and women's squads) and women's wrestling (part of the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program), are de facto Division I sports; the NCAA holds a single skiing championship open to members of all three divisions, and does not currently include women's wrestling in its divisional structure. Timothy Edward Kearney (born October 5, 1950) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Cardinals. He played college football at Northern Michigan University. Early years Kearney attended Kingsford High School, before accepting a scholarship to play football at Northern Michigan University. He received Little All-American honors in 1971. In 1982, he was inducted into the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame. The 1971 Utah Redskins football team was an American football team that represented the University of Utah as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during the 1971 NCAA University Division football season. Punter (football)
A punter (P) in gridiron football is a special teams player who receives the snapped ball directly from the line of scrimmage and then punts (kicks) the football to the opposing team so as to limit any field position advantage. This generally happens on a fourth down in American football and a third down in Canadian football. Punters may also occasionally take part in fake punts in those same situations, when they throw or run the football instead of punting. Skills and usage The purpose of the punt is to force the team that is receiving the kick to start as far as possible from the kicking team's end zone. Marvin Fredrick Bateman (born April 5, 1950) is a former American football punter in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills. He played college football at the University of Utah. Early years Bateman attended Highland High School, where he competed in football, basketball and baseball. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Utah. He led the nation in punting in his last 2 years and became the first Utah football player to receive first-team All-American honors two years in a row. As a senior, he set school records for average yards per punt (48.07) and total punt yardage (3,269). During his college career he was also the team's placekicker, making 21 field goals (sixth in school history), converting 51 percent of his attempts and had a school record 59 yard field goal. The 1971 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1971 Big Ten Conference football season. In their third season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled an 11–1 record, outscored opponents 421 to 83, won the Big Ten Conference championship, and were ranked No. 4 in the final UPI Poll and No. 6 in the final AP Poll. Defensive back Frank Gusich and center Guy Murdock were the team captains. The Wolverines were undefeated in the regular season, including three consecutive shutout victories over Virginia (56–0), UCLA (38–0), and Navy (46–0). Michael F. Keller (born December 13, 1949) is a former American football linebacker and football executive in the National Football League. He played professional football for the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at the University of Michigan. Early years A native of Chicago, Illinois, he attended Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. College career Keller played college football at the University of Michigan and became a three-year starter at defensive end from 1969 to 1971. The 1971 Arizona Wildcats football team represented the University of Arizona in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during the 1971 NCAA University Division football season. In their third season under head coach Bob Weber, the Wildcats compiled a 5–6 record (3–3 against WAC opponents), finished in third place in the WAC, and were outscored by their opponents, 232 to 191. The team played its home games in Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
