Paul Elmore Oliver Bryan
Sir Paul Elmore Oliver Bryan (3 August 1913 – 11 October 2004) was a British Conservative politician. Early life Bryan was born in Karuizawa, Japan, the seventh of nine children of The Rev Ingram Bryan. He lived in Japan until he was eight and then returned to England and was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead. He studied Modern Languages at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he took great interest in sport, playing cricket and rugby – he was scrum half in the college rugby team where he played alongside his friend Iain Macleod, the future Conservative Chancellor. After graduating he worked in Halifax, Yorkshire, where he met his first wife Betty Hoyle. They married in 1939. Military career Paul Bryan had a distinguished wartime career. John Inch
Sir John Ritchie Inch CVO CBE QPM (14 May 1911 – 22 November 1993) was a police officer who was successively Chief Constable of three Scottish police forces. Inch was born in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. At the age of eleven he was selected to attend the Hamilton Academy. He then entered the University of Glasgow, graduating MA in law. Joining Lanarkshire Constabulary in 1931 and posted to Bellshill police station, Inch was promoted sergeant in 1936. Undertaking further studies, Inch obtained an LLB and in 1938, at the age of 27, was promoted to inspector in charge of recruit training. He qualified as an Air Raid Precautions (ARP) instructor and became the organiser of civil defence in Lanarkshire on the outbreak of World War II. Kingsley Charles Dunham
Sir Kingsley Charles Dunham (2 January 1910 – 5 April 2001) was one of the leading British geologists and mineralogists of the 20th century. He was a Professor of Geology at the University of Durham from 1950–71. He was later Professor Emeritus from 1967–2001. He was director of the British Geological Survey from 1967–75. Early life Dunham was born in Sturminster Newton, Dorset and moved at an early age with his family to Durham. He attended the Durham Johnston School (then a Grammar School) and then won a Foundation Scholarship to Hatfield College, Durham, graduating with a first-class degree in Geology in 1930 at a time when Arthur Holmes was professor. Donald Douglas (surgeon)
Sir Donald Macleod Douglas, (28 June 1911 28 January 1993) was a Scottish academic surgeon. His schooling and medical undergraduate education were at St Andrews following which he embarked at an early stage on an academic career, winning a scholarship to pursue research at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. After further research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London he served in World War II as a surgical specialist with the Eighth Army in North Africa and was seconded from military duties to serve as Professor of Surgery in Baghdad. As professor of Surgery in St Andrews and Dundee, he developed research interests in wound healing and the design of operating theatres. He was president of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was knighted in 1972.
