German Television
Television in Germany began in Berlin on 22 March 1935, broadcasting for 90 minutes three times a week. It was home to the first public television station in the world, named ''Fernsehsender Paul Nipkow''. In 2000, the German television market had approximately 36.5 million television households, making it the largest television market in Europe. Nowadays, 95% of German households have at least one television receiver. All the main German TV channels are free-to-air. History In 1948 the British occupation forces allowed NWDR to broadcast television programmes for the British zone. Other regional networks also started to launch television in their own areas. Meanwhile, the GDR was launching its own television service, Deutscher Fernsehfunk (DFF), based on the Soviet Union, Soviet model. ''Königlich Bayerisches Amtsgericht'' ''(Royal Bavarian District Court)'' is a German comedy television series. It was produced by ZDF in the years 1968 to 1972 and contains 52 episodes. It is set in the fictional town of Geisbach in Lower Bavaria, a province of the Kingdom of Bavaria, in itself a part of the German Empire, shortly before World War I and revolves around the court proceedings of the local ''Königlich Bayerisches Amtsgericht''. ', also known as ' ( 787) is an 1823 one-act singspiel by Franz Schubert after a libretto by Ignaz Franz Castelli with spoken dialogue by the composer. Castelli's libretto was based on ''Lisistrata, ou Les Athéniennes, Comédie en un acte et en prose, mêlée de vaudevilles'' by François-Benoît Hoffman, which had premiered at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris in 1802. The French play in turn was based on '' Lysistrata'' by Aristophanes (411 BCE). ''Polizeiruf 110'' ("Police call 110") is a long-running German-language detective television series likened to Poirot. The name links to the emergency telephone number of the ''Volkspolizei''. The first episode was broadcast 27 June 1971 in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and after the dissolution of Deutscher Fernsehfunk the series was picked up by ARD. It was originally created as a counterpart to the West German series ''Tatort'', and quickly became a public favorite. In contrast with other television crime series in which killings are practically the primary focus, while ''Tatort'' handled homicide cases, the cases handled in the GDR TV's ''Polizeiruf'' were more often more frequent crimes such as domestic violence, extortion, fraud, theft and juvenile delinquency, as well as alcoholism, child abuse and rape. ''Rottenknechte'' is a 1971 East German five-part television film directed by Frank Beyer Frank Paul Beyer (; 26 May 1932 – 1 October 2006) was a German film director. In East Germany he was one of the most important film directors, working for the state film monopoly DEFA and directed films that dealt mostly with the Nazi era .... The first part premiered on 8 January 1971 on the East German public channel DFF1, with the other four parts being shown in the same month. The film concentrates on the last days of the German navy during World War II. The title derives from the nickname of the junior of two commanding officers in a pair (''Rotte'') of submarines. The leader is the '' Rottenführer'' ("pair leader"), and his subordinate is the ''Rottenknecht'' ("pair servant"). Quentin Durward (TV Series)
''Quentin Durward'' is a French-German swashbuckler TV series. It was produced in 1970, directed by Gilles Grangier and broadcast in 1971. The series starred the German actor Amadeus August as the protagonist and the French actress Marie-France Boyer as Isabelle de Croye. The series was based on Sir Walter Scott's in 1823 published novel ''Quentin Durward''. It concerns a Scottish soldier who serves French King Louis XI (1423-1483) while the King has to overcome the schemes of his rival Charles the Bold and Jean Balue. The TV series kept close to the classic novel and was often shot at historic French locations. The French version consists of 7 instalments of 52 minutes each, while the dubbed German version had 13 episodes of about 25 minutes apiece. Both versions have been made available on DVD.
