1971 Women's World Cup
The 1971 Women's World Cup (Spanish: 1971 Campeonato de Fútbol Femenil) was an association football tournament organised by the Federation of Independent European Female Football (FIEFF) in Mexico in August–September 1971. Held in Mexico City and Guadalajara, it featured women's teams from six countries and is the second known tournament to be named as a women's football World Cup after the 1970 edition in Italy. It was twenty years before the first official FIFA women's world cup. Alongside Mexico, who qualified automatically as hosts, teams from South America and Europe qualified to the 1971 cup. Denmark were the tournament champions, defending its title by winning the final 3–0 against Mexico, in front of a 110,000 crowd. Estadio Azteca () is a multi-purpose stadium located in Mexico City. It is the official home of football clubs Club América and Cruz Azul as well as the Mexico national football team. Elisabetta Vignotto (born 13 January 1954), nicknamed "Betty", is an Italian former footballer who played as a striker. Club career At club level Vignotto represented numerous different clubs in Serie A. In 1986 she told ''la Repubblica'': "So far I've changed teams ten times. But it's not that I'm capricious. The teams broke up." According to the ''Dizionario del Calcio Italiano'', she scored 467 goals in 461 Serie A appearances. She was the chairman ( it, presidente, lit=president) of A.S.D. Pat Dunn (''née'' Patricia Alice Thurston; 29 January 1933 – 11 July 1999) was among the first women to officially qualify as a football referee. Early life Pat Dunn was born in London in 1933, the daughter of Lewis Henry Thurston (1893–1972) and his wife, Rebecca, ''née'' Stebbings, who died when Pat was one year old. The family moved from south London to Weymouth, Dorset, in the early Second World War. Pat became an enthusiastic footballer when growing up. Carol Wilson (born June 1952) is a British former amateur footballer. She captained an unofficial England women's national football team — calling themselves the "British Independents", now known as the "Lost Lionesses" — in 1971, including at the 1971 Women's World Cup in Mexico.
