1971 PGA Tour Qualifying School Graduates
This is a list of the 1971 PGA Tour Qualifying School graduates. The event was held in mid-October at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It is generally regarded to be one of the greatest qualifying schools in history with a number of future stars graduating, including Lanny Wadkins and Tom Watson. Tournament summary After three 72-hole regional qualifiers, there were 75 players in the 108-hole final qualifying tournament. Bob Zender was the medalist as 23 players earned their tour cards. Overall, according to the ''Orlando Sentinels Jim Warters, "The PGA tour qualifying school came and went just about the way the experts predicted." PGA National Resort And Spa
PGA National Resort is a resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It has five championship 18-hole golf courses, the most famous of which is "The Champion", which has hosted the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship, the Senior PGA Championship for 19 consecutive years from 1982 to 2000, and the PGA Tour's Honda Classic since 2007. It has been home to the Professional Golfers' Association of America since the resort's establishment, but the PGA has announced that it will move to new headquarters in Texas in summer 2022. The resort also includes 339 hotel rooms, nine restaurants and lounges, a 34,000-square-foot conference wing, a 40,000-square-foot spa, 33,000-square-foot health and racquet club with 19 tennis courts, a golf academy, and a members club. Canadian Amateur
The Canadian Amateur Championship, begun in 1895, is the men's amateur golf championship of Canada. It is staged annually by Golf Canada. It was played at match play until 1968, went to stroke play beginning in 1969, and reverted to match play in 1995.''Golf in Canada: A History'', by James A. Sunnehanna Amateur
The Sunnehanna Amateur, officially the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions, is a men's amateur golf tournament. Founded in 1954, it is hosted annually at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, United States. It is considered to be one of the top amateur golf tournaments held in the United States and is classified as a Category A event by the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The Sunnehanna Amateur is played in stroke play format; 72 holes (four rounds) held over four days. Many current and former PGA Tour, Champions Tour, Walker Cup and Ryder Cup players have competed in the tournament. Leonard Thompson (golfer)
Leonard Stephen Thompson (born January 1, 1947) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour. Thompson was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina. He attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and was a member of the golf team. He was a teammate of future fellow PGA Tour players Joe Inman and Lanny Wadkins. He graduated in 1969 and turned pro in 1971. Thompson had more than 70 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events during his career, winning 3 times. His first win came in 1974 at Jackie Gleason's Inverrary Classic. His best finish in a major championship was T7 at The Masters in 1979. During his late forties, Thompson, like so many of his colleagues, played some on the Nationwide Tour to prepare for the Champions Tour. Gary Groh
} Gary Mathieu Groh (born October 11, 1944) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s. Groh was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Michigan State University and turned pro in 1968. Groh played on the PGA Tour from 1971 to 1978 and won one event. His career year was 1975 when he won the Hawaiian Open, earned $68,296 and finished 31st on the money list. His best finish in a major championship was T18 at the U.S. Open in 1975. After leaving the PGA Tour, Groh took a job as head pro at Bob O' Link Golf Club in Highland Park, Illinois – a job he has held for more than a quarter of a century. In 1995, he joined the Senior PGA Tour and has played in a limited number of events; his best finish in this venue is T17 at the 1995 Ameritech Senior Open. The California Amateur Championship or California Amateur is a golf championship held in California for the state's top amateur golfers. The tournament is run by the California Golf Association. The first event was held in 1912 at the Del Monte Golf Club. It was played at Pebble Beach Golf Links from 1919 to 2006. Forrest Fezler
Forrest Oliver Fezler (September 23, 1949 – December 21, 2018) was an American golf course design consultant and PGA Tour professional golfer. His most prosperous year as a professional came in 1974, when he won the Southern Open and finished in second place to Hale Irwin at the U.S. Open, his best finish at a major. Early years Fezler was born in Hayward, California. He first showed an interest in the game of golf as a 7-year-old boy growing up in San Jose, California by drawing golf holes. As a youth, he would sneak onto the course at the San Jose Country Club to practice. He attended James Lick High School and was a member of the golf team; and a teammate of future fellow PGA Tour player Roger Maltbie. Fezler attended San Jose City College from 1968–1969. French Open (golf)
The Open de France is a European Tour golf tournament. Inaugurated in 1906 it is the oldest national open in Continental Europe and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the tour's inception in 1972. The 100th edition of the event was held in 2016. The 2022 edition will take place between 22 and 25 September on the Golf National course. There will be €3 million of prize fund. Last edition played was the 2019 tournament, won by Nicolas Colsaerts. Originally played at La Boulie, the tournament has been hosted by many different venues, but since 1991, it has been held at the Le Golf National near Paris every year except for 1999 and 2001.
