Statistics of North American Soccer League (1968–84), North American Soccer League in season 1971. This was the 4th season of the NASL. Overview Eight teams competed with Dallas Tornado winning NASL Final 1971, the championship. However Dallas' road to that title was the stuff of legends. In Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinal against the Rochester Lancers (1967–80), Rochester Lancers, league scoring champion Carlos Metidieri of Rochester mercifully ended the longest match in NASL history, 2–1, late in the 6th 15 minute OT period. The golden goal was scored in the 176th minute, or less than four minutes shy of playing two complete games in one day! Three days later Dallas evened the series at one game each with a 3–1 regulation win. In the rubber match four days later, the two teams ended regulation tied again at 1 goal apiece. Montreal Olympique
The Montreal Olympique were a Canadian soccer team that competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1971 to 1973. The team was based in Montreal and played its 1971 and 1973 home matches at Autostade and at the Universite de Montreal Stadium for the 1972 season. Future Liverpool and Scottish National Team star Graeme Souness appeared in ten games for the club on loan from Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in 1972 and future National Hockey League player Jim Corsi also played for the Olympique. During the team's three years of competition it failed to qualify for the post season and never had a winning record. Uriel Da Veiga (born August 28, 1940) is a retired Brazilian football (soccer) player who played professionally in the North American Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. In 1967, Da Viega signed with the Baltimore Bays of the National Professional Soccer League. In 1969, the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League. Willie Evans (21 November 1939 – c. 2014) was a Ghanaian footballer who played at both professional and international levels as a defender. Frank Donlavey, (22 February 1945 – 1 January 2009), was a Scottish soccer player who played in the NASL. In 1976, he played in the National Soccer League with the Hamilton Italo-Canadians. Clive Charles
Clive Michael Charles (3 October 1951 – 26 August 2003) was an English football player, coach and television announcer. He was one of five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) coaches to win more than 400 games. Born in Dagenham, Essex to Grenadan immigrants, Charles began his career with West Ham United, where his brother John Charles played. In 1978, he began playing professionally in the United States with the NASL Portland Timbers. He spent the last years of his career playing in the Major Indoor Soccer League, first with the Pittsburgh Spirits, then with the Los Angeles Lazers. Charles spent his later life in the United States, coaching at the high school, collegiate and international levels in the Portland, Oregon area, primarily at Reynolds High School and the University of Portland. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Richard Hall (born 3 July 1945) is a former professional footballer who played as a defender. He played seven seasons with the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League. Born in England, he earned four caps with the United States national team between 1973 and 1975. He later coached high school boys soccer in Dallas, Texas. Club career In 1970 Hall moved to the U.S. from England and signed with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He spent the next seven seasons in Dallas. In 1971 the Tornado won the NASL championship as Hall was named a first team All Star.
