1971 Cannes Film Festival
The 24th Cannes Film Festival was held from 12 to 27 May 1971. The Palme d'Or went to ''The Go-Between'' by Joseph Losey. The festival opened with ''Gimme Shelter'', a documentary about English rock band The Rolling Stones directed by David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin and closed with '' Les mariés de l'an II'', directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau. The festival paid tribute to Charlie Chaplin and honored him with the title of ''Commander of the national order of the Legion of Honor''. The Short Film Palme d'Or (french: Palme d'Or du court métrage) is the highest prize given to a short film at the Cannes Film Festival. Anselmo Duarte Bento (; 21 April 1920 – 7 November 2009) was a Brazilian actor, screenwriter and film director. Early life Duarte was born in Salto, São Paulo on 21 April 1920. He was raised by his mother, alongside his six siblings. Career His 1962 film ''O Pagador de Promessas''—''Keeper of Promises''—was awarded the Golden Palm at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival, becoming, to date, the only Brazilian feature film to be distinguished this way and the first winner from the Southern Hemisphere. Alberto Bevilacqua
Alberto Bevilacqua (27 June 1934 – 9 September 2013) was an Italian writer and filmmaker. Leonardo Sciascia, an Italian writer and politician, read Bevilacqua's first collection of stories, ''The Dust on the Grass'' (1955), was impressed and published it. Mario Colombi Guidotti, responsible for the literary supplement of the ''Journal of Parma'', began to publish his stories in the early 1950s. ''Friendship Lost'', his first book of poems, was published in 1961. ''Caliph'', published in 1964, was his break-through novel. The protagonist, Irene Corsini, imbued with his own sweet and energetic temperament, is one of the strongest female characters in Italian literature. ''La califfa'' (English: ''Lady Caliph'') is a 1970 Franco-Italian social drama film written and directed by Alberto Bevilacqua. It was entered into the 1971 Cannes Film Festival. Plot In the Emilia province of Italy, out of solidarity with the workers fired from another failed company, the workers occupy the factory of self-made industrialist Annibale Doberdò. In dealing with the situation, he starts negotiations. An employee, the beautiful and fiery Irene, nicknamed '' Califfa'', whose worker-husband was killed during a demonstration, meets with Doberdò. He wants to induce the strikers back to work and they show uncertainty between the directives of their union and the incitements to violence by extremists.
