The 1970 U.S. Women's Open was the 25th U.S. Women's Open, held July 2–5 at Muskogee Country Club in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Defending champion Donna Caponi won the second of her four major titles, one stroke ahead of runners-up Sandra Haynie and Sandra Spuzich. Caponi's four-foot (1.3 m) putt for a double bogey on the final hole hung on the lip before falling to avoid a Monday playoff. Muskogee, Oklahoma
Muskogee () is the thirteenth-largest city in Oklahoma and the county seat of Muskogee County. Home to Bacone College, it lies approximately southeast of Tulsa. The population of the city was 36,878 as of the 2020 census, a 6.0 percent decrease from 39,223 in 2010. History French fur traders were believed to have established a temporary village near the future Muskogee in 1806, but the first permanent European-American settlement was established in 1817 on the south bank of the Verdigris River, north of present-day Muskogee. After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 under President Andrew Jackson, the Muscogee Creek Indians were one of the " Five Civilized Tribes" forced out of the American Southeast to Indian Territory. Kathy Whitworth
Kathrynne Ann Whitworth (September 27, 1939 – December 24, 2022) was an American professional golfer. During her playing career she won 88 LPGA Tour tournaments, more than anyone else on the LPGA or PGA Tours. Whitworth was also a runner-up 93 times, giving her 181 top-two finishes. In 1981, she became the first woman to reach career earnings of $1 million on the LPGA Tour. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Shirley Englehorn
Shirley Ruth Englehorn (December 12, 1940 – October 2, 2022) was an American professional golfer. Nicknamed "Dimples", she won 11 tournaments during her LPGA Tour career, including one major, the 1970 LPGA Championship. Early life and amateur career Englehorn was born on December 12, 1940, in Caldwell, Idaho, where she was raised. She first played golf when she was six years old, having been introduced to the sport by Shirley Spork, one of the thirteen founders of the LPGA, and also studied with Johnny Revolta, an 18-time PGA Tour winner and the PGA Championship victor in 1935. Clifford Ann Creed (born September 23, 1938) is a retired American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1963 and won eleven LPGA Tour events in all. Amateur career Creed was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, and started playing golf at age 11. She graduated from Lamar Tech in 1960 with a degree in physical education. She won the Louisiana State Women's Amateur six times between 1955 and 1961, and won the Western Junior in 1956. Carol Mann (February 3, 1941 – May 20, 2018) was an American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1961 and won two major championships and 38 LPGA Tour events in all. Jo Ann Prentice
Jo Ann Prentice (born February 9, 1933) is an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. Prentice was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She turned professional in 1956.
