1970 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1970 Northwest Territories general election took place on December 21, 1970. It took place during the centennial of the territory. Among the festivities earlier in the year was an official visit by Queen Elizabeth II to open the first Arctic Winter games in Yellowknife. The world-famous Polar Bear licence plate was also unveiled. The centenary election brought up a number of old issues that have been seen in many elections in the past 100 years, mainly the transfer of powers from the federal government to the territory, full self-government, and rights for natives. This is a list of territorial elections in Northwest Territories, Canada since 1870. The Northwest Territories operates on a consensus government using the First Past the Post electoral system. The territory does not presently recognize political parties. 1967 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1967 Northwest Territories general election took place on July 4, 1967. Tragedy would ensue after this election as member-elect Bill Berg died in a plane crash while flying into Yellowknife on October 1, only a few days before the new council was to open. This would be the first time since 1905 where more elected members would sit than appointed members. This is also the first election in the history of the territories that electoral districts covered the entire territories. The redistribution of districts was a result of the Carruthers Commission. Tom Butters (politician)
Thomas H. Butters, (June 1925 – March 2, 2015) was a politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. He had a long career as a Member of the Northwest Territories Legislature from 1970 until 1991. Butters was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1970 Northwest Territories general election. He won the new electoral district of Western Arctic defeating incumbent Duncan Pryde. Due to a significant redistribution of electoral district in 1975, Butters ran for re-election in the 1975 Northwest Territories general election in the new Inuvik electoral district because Western Arctic no longer covered his home in Inuvik. He won re-election in the new riding. Butters was re-elected for a third term in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election. In his third term he was appointed as the Minister of Finance by Premier George Braden in 1981. Northwest Territories (french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada. The electoral district covers the entire territory. This riding was created in 1962 from Mackenzie River riding. It was composed of the entire territory of the Northwest Territories. In 1979, the riding was divided into the ridings of Western Arctic and Nunatsiaq (later Nunavut). Following the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999, the riding of Western Arctic was made coterminous with the new Northwest Territories. After 1999, Western Arctic was an anomaly in that, unlike Nunavut and Yukon, it did not share the name of the territory with which it was coterminous. Nick Sibbeston
Nick G. Sibbeston (born November 21, 1943) is a Canadian retired politician, serving from 1985 to 1987 as the fourth premier of the Northwest Territories. Sibbeston was a Senator representing the Northwest Territories from 1999 until 2017, when he resigned on his 74th birthday, a year prior to reaching the mandatory retirement age. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Northwest Territories representing Mackenzie-Laird from 1970 to 1975 and from 1979 until 1991. Early life and career Sibbeston is from Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. Considered a residential-school survivor, he attended residential schools in Fort Simpson, Providence, Inuvik, and Yellowknife.
