1970 New York Gubernatorial Election
The 1970 New York gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1970 to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of New York. Incumbent Republican Governor Nelson Rockefeller defeated the Democratic nominee, former UN Ambassador and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, by more than ten percentage points. On January 1, 1971, Rockefeller was sworn in for his fourth term as governor. Rockefeller received over 3.15 million votes in total, the highest total in any New York gubernatorial election until Andrew Cuomo received 3.64 million in 2018. Goldberg's running mate, Basil Paterson, was the first African-American nominee for Lieutenant Governor of New York. His son, David Paterson, would become the first African-American lieutenant governor of New York. Paterson would serve as governor of New York from 2008 to 2010 after the resignation of Eliot Spitzer. 1994 New York Gubernatorial Election
The 1994 New York gubernatorial election was an election for the state governorship held on November 8, 1994. Incumbent Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo ran for a fourth term, but was defeated by Republican George Pataki in an upset victory. Pataki had previously been described by the ''New York Daily News'' as "a little-known Republican state senator." The conservative ''New York Post'', on the other hand, attributed the result to how "Voters had grown tired of the 12-year incumbent Cuomo and his liberalism." Pataki's victory was one of the most notable of the 1994 "Republican Revolution" midterm elections, which also ousted Governors in Alabama, New Mexico, and Texas. During this election, the Democrats won a number of the governorships up for re-election via many ways, such as retirement of incumbent, term limits, or defeat of incumbent. Stephen Emery was an American subway dispatcher and political activist from New York. He was twice the vice-presidential nominee of the Socialist Labor Party of America in 1948 and 1952. Running alongside Edward A. Teichert in 1948, the SLP ticket received 29,244 votes in 22 states. Four years later in 1952, Emery was nominated alongside Eric Hass. Hass/Emery received 30,406 votes.
