1970 Massachusetts Elections
The 1970 Massachusetts general election was held on November 3, 1970, throughout Massachusetts. Democratic and Republican candidates were selected in party primaries held September 15, 1970. At the federal level, Ted Kennedy was re-elected to the United States Senate and ten of the commonwealth's twelve incumbents were re-elected to the United States House of Representatives. One retired and one lost re-nomination. No seats switched parties. Incumbents seeking reelection won all major state offices: Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Auditor, and Treasurer. Governor and lieutenant governor Republicans Francis W. 1970 United States Elections
The 1970 United States elections were held on November 3, and elected the members of the 92nd United States Congress. The election took place during the Vietnam War, in the middle of Republican President Richard Nixon's first term. Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew campaigned heavily for Republican candidates, with Nixon encouraging voters to respond to anti-war and civil rights activists by voting the Republican ticket. In an October speech he declared, "My friends, I say that the answer to those that engage in disruption--to those that shout their filthy slogans, to those that try to shout down speakers--is not to answer in kind, but go to the polls on election day, and in the quiet of that ballot box, stand up and be counted: the great silent majority of America." John Davoren
John Francis Xavier Davoren (July 27, 1915 – August 24, 1997) was a U.S. politician who served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1955 to 1967 and Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth from 1967 to 1974. While in the house, he served as the House Majority Leader from 1962 to 1964 and Speaker from 1964 to 1967. Louise Day Hicks
Anna Louise Day Hicks (October 16, 1916 – October 21, 2003) was an American politician and lawyer from Boston, Massachusetts, best known for her staunch opposition to desegregation in Boston public schools, and especially to court-ordered busing, in the 1960s and 1970s. A longtime member of Boston's school board and city council, she served one term in the United States House of Representatives, succeeding John William McCormack. The daughter of a wealthy and prominent attorney and judge, Hicks attended Simmons College and received her qualification as a teacher from Wheelock College. Robert Drinan
Robert Frederick Drinan (November 15, 1920 – January 28, 2007) was a Jesuit priest, lawyer, human rights activist, and Democratic U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. Drinan left office to obey Pope John Paul II's prohibition on political activity by priests. He was also a law professor at Georgetown University Law Center for the last twenty-six years of his life. Education and legal career Drinan grew up in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, the son of Ann Mary (Flanagan) and James John Drinan. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1938. He received a B.A. and an M.A. from Boston College finishing in 1942, and joined the Society of Jesus the same year; he was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1953. Josiah Augustus "Si" Spaulding (December 21, 1922 – March 27, 1983) was an American businessman, attorney, and politician. Education and military service Spaulding graduated from the Hotchkiss School and Yale University in 1947, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. He served three years as a pilot for the US Marine Corps during World War II and was discharged as a first lieutenant. He attended Columbia Law School.
