1970 International Cross Country Championships
The 1970 International Cross Country Championships was held in Vichy, France, on March 22, 1970. An alternate women's championship was held one day earlier in Frederick, Maryland, Frederick, Maryland, United States at the VFW Country Club, on March 21, 1970. A report on the Vichy event as well as on the Frederick event was given in the Glasgow Herald. Complete results for men, junior men, women (Vichy), women (Frederick), medallists, and the results of British athletes were published. International Cross Country Union
The International Cross Country Union (ICCU) was the first major international sports governing body for cross country running. Created in 1903, it launched the International Cross Country Championships that same year. Originally a grouping for contests between the four Home Nations of the British Isles (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales), the body was symbolic of the increasing co-operation of the older national bodies found in those nations. The organisation expanded to include France in 1907 and by the 50th annual edition of the championships it included countries of North Africa and Western Europe, the United States, and New Zealand. The appearance of France directly led to the inclusion of athletes of French colonial empire, its colonies and ultimately Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco competed independently at the competition. Jack Lane (athlete)
John William Lane (29 May 1898 – June 1984) was an English professional footballer who played as an inside right. He is best remembered for his five years in the Football League with Brentford, for whom he made 234 appearances and was club captain. He was posthumously inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in 2015. Club career Burnley An inside forward, Lane began his career at hometown non-League club Cradley Heath. He secured a move to the top flight of English football with Burnley in December 1920 and made his professional debut during the club's Championship-winning 1920–21 season. Abdelkader Zaddem (born 29 November 1944) is a retired Tunisian long-distance runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres. He finished eighth at the 1972 Olympic Games. When he won the gold medal at the 1975 Mediterranean Games, he also set a championship record of 28:27.0 minutes which stood until 1991. He also won two gold medals at the 1973 Maghreb Championships and one at the 1975 Maghreb Championships. He competed many times at the World Cross Country Championships, with a nineteenth place from 1974 and a twelfth place from 1975 as his best results. Ricky Wilde (athlete)
Richard Spencer Wilde (13 October 1945 – 24 September 2019) was a British male long-distance runner. He was a world indoor record holder and a gold medallist at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1970. He won the 4-mile Nos Galan in 1967, was the North of England champion over 3 miles in 1968, then became British Universities champion in the 5000 metres in 1969. He began to establish himself nationally shortly after. He was runner-up to Ian McCafferty over 3000 metres at the AAA Indoor Championships in 1968 and 1969 before finally succeeding his rival in 1970. He also took third in the 5000 m behind Ian Stewart and Alan Blinston at the 1969 AAA Championships. Wilde's greatest achievement was a world indoor best of 7:46.85 to win the 3000m gold medal at the 1970 European Athletics Indoor Championships. Richard George Taylor (born 3 January 1945 in Coventry) is a British former long-distance runner. Athletics career He competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics. He represented England in the 3 miles event, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. Thelma Wright
Thelma Wright (née Fynn; born 9 October 1951) is a Canadian middle-distance runner. She competed in the 1500 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1970, Wright won a bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships in France, and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh at 1500 metres. In 1973, she won another bronze medal at the 1973 Pacific Conference Games in Toronto, in the 1500 metres, as well as at the Commonwealth Games in 1974, over the same distance. In 1975, she won a silver medal in the 3000 metres at the World Student Games in Rome, setting a Canadian Record of 8:54.94, which would ranked her 5th for the year. Rita Ridley
Rita Ridley (née Lincoln; 4 November 1946 – 12 February 2013) was an English middle- and long-distance runner. Biography She started in athletics at school in Essex with her twin sister Iris. Aged 18, she finished second to Joyce Smith in the mile race at the WAAA Championships. She won the following year in a championship record time of 4:47.9, retained the national mile title in 1967 and won the newly introduced 1500 metres in 1968, 1970 and 1971. She won the national cross country championships in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974. In 1974 she also won the prestigious Cinque Mulini Cross country and gained a bronze medal in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. In 1969, she achieved a British record time of 4:15.9 in the 1500 m and she set a new record of 4:15.4 in 1970 and then 4:14.3 and 4:12.65 in 1971.
