1970 French Open – Women's Singles
Defending champion Margaret Court defeated Helga Niessen in the final, 6–2, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1970 French Open. It was her fifth French Open singles title, her third consecutive major title, and her eighteenth singles major overall. Court would go on to win the remaining two majors of the year to become the first woman in the Open Era to achieve the Grand Slam. Margaret Court
Margaret Court (''née'' Smith; born 16 July 1942), also known as Margaret Smith Court, is an Australian retired former world No. 1 tennis player and a Christian minister. Considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, her 24 major singles titles and total of 64 major titles (including 19 Grand Slam women's doubles and 21 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles) are the most in tennis history. Court was born in Albury, New South Wales. In 1960, aged 17, she won the first of seven consecutive Australian Open singles titles. Judit Szörényi (born 8 December 1949) is a Hungarian former professional tennis player. Szörényi won nine national championships during her career, three of them in singles. Kerry Harris
Kerry Harris (born 19 September 1949) is an Australian former professional tennis player, active from 1967 to 1975, who reached the semi-final of the 1972 Australian Open, and reached four Grand Slam doubles finals, of which she won one, in the 1972 Australian Open. Career Kerry's early years were spent under the guidance of J Hildebrands (Snr), before being coached by Harry Hopman and trained by Stan Nicholes. In 1968, Harris started on the International tour, the first year in the open era, and she was chosen to be a part of Lawn Tennis Association of Australia's Touring Team with Harry Hopman as manager. Fay Toyne
Fay Toyne (born 18 December 1943), also known by her married name Fay Toyne Moore, is a retired tennis player from Australia whose career spanned the 1960s. Toyne was a doubles finalist at the 1966 French Championships. Partnering Jill Blackman they were defeated in three sets in the final by compatriots Margaret Smith and Judy Tegart. In the singles event her best result at a Grand Slam event was twice reaching the fourth round. Esmé Emmanuel Berg (born 14 June 1947) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. Emmanuel was the girls' singles champion at the 1965 French Championships. She won a doubles gold medal at the 1965 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Her best performance at Wimbledon came in 1972 when she was a doubles quarterfinalist, partnering Ceci Martinez. Alena Palmeová-West (born 7 January 1945) is a Czech former professional tennis player. Biography Palmeová born in 1945 in Jihlava. She married American William Sidney West on July 17, 1970, divorced 1984. After the wedding she played under the name Alena Palmeová-West. Monica Giorgi
Monica Giorgi (born 3 January 1946) is an Italian former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Livorno, Giorgi twice reached the third round of the French Open during her career and played one Federation Cup tie for Italy, against Australia in the 1972 World Group quarter-finals. Giorgi was very politically active and wore an anti-apartheid shirt onto the court for the tie, which was held in South Africa, for which she was briefly banned by the Italian tennis federation. Giorgi was jailed in the early 1980s for her association with anarchist group Azione Rivoluzionaria. Authorities accused her of being involved in an attempted kidnapping, as well as attempted murder for those injured in the attempt, but she was acquitted of all these charges due to insufficient evidence. Betty Stöve
Betty Flippina Stöve (born 24 June 1945) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. She is best remembered for reaching the ladies' singles final, the ladies' doubles final and the mixed doubles final during the same year at Wimbledon in 1977. She also won ten Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Career Stöve began playing tennis internationally in the mid-1960s. She made her Grand Slam debut at the 1964 Wimbledon. A virus, complicated by a malfunctioning thyroid gland, forced Stöve out of tennis for an 18-month period in the late 1960s. Despite being advised that she should never play tennis again, Stöve recovered to have her best years on the circuit.
