1968–69 Phoenix Suns Season
The 1968–69 Phoenix Suns season was the inaugural season for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association. Head coach Red Kerr led the franchise to its first win in their debut game, over the Seattle SuperSonics. The Suns lost more games in their initial season than in any year since, and did not have a winning record against any other team. They played all their home games in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Dick Van Arsdale was the franchise's first All-Star selection when he was selected to play in the 1969 All-Star Game. He was the team's second leading scorer at 21 points per game, behind eventual Hall of Fame member Gail Goodrich, who averaged 23.8, the seventh-highest in the league for the season. Johnny "Red" Kerr
John Graham "Red" Kerr (July 17, 1932 – February 26, 2009) was an American basketball player, coach, and color commentator. He played in the NBA from 1954 to 1966, mainly as a member of the Syracuse Nationals. He later held several coaching and administrative positions before embarking on a thirty-three-year career as a television color commentator for the Chicago Bulls. Playing career High school Although Johnny Kerr's first passion was soccer, an eight-inch growth spurt during his senior year at Tilden Technical High School, and some friendly persuasion from basketball Head Coach Bill Postl and school principal Robert Lakemacher, Kerr turned his attention to basketball. San Diego Rockets
The Houston Rockets are an American professional basketball team based in Houston, Texas. The team plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was established in 1967, and played in San Diego, California for four years, before moving to Houston, Texas. In the Rockets' debut season, they won 15 games. After drafting Elvin Hayes first overall in the 1968 NBA Draft, they made their first appearance in the playoffs in 1969. After Hayes was traded, Moses Malone replaced him. Malone won two Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards during his time in Houston, and he led the Rockets to the 1978 conference finals in his first year with the Rockets. McCoy McLemore
McCoy McLemore Jr. (April 3, 1942 – April 30, 2009) was an American professional basketball player in the 1960s and 1970s. He played college basketball for Drake University. Basketball career Early years Born in Houston, Texas, McLemore attended Houston's Jack Yates High School. College McLemore first attended Moberly Area Community College, but then transferred to Drake University, leading his team to be co-Missouri Valley Conference champions. Stan McKenzie (basketball)
Stanley McKenzie (October 6, 1944 – July 21, 2021) was an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Miami, Florida, McKenzie played college basketball at New York University. He scored over 1,000 points in his collegiate career, and was inducted into the NYU Hall of Fame in 1984. He was selected by the Baltimore Bullets in the 11th round of the 1966 NBA draft. He played one season with the Bullets, then played for the Phoenix Suns for two years (1968-1970). The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division and play their home games at Little Caesars Arena, located in Midtown. Paul Richard Long (born February 8, 1944) is a former NBA and ABA basketball player. He played professionally for the Detroit Pistons, Kentucky Colonels and the Buffalo Braves. Biography Long was born in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated from Waggener High School in Louisville. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. David Lattin (born December 23, 1943) is an American former basketball player. He was the starting center for the Texas Western Miners in their NCAA championship year in 1966. During his playing career, he was listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 225 lbs. His nickname during his career was "Big Daddy D". David Lattin was born on December 23, 1943 in Houston Texas. His mother, Elsie Lattin, was widowed when Lattin’s father died in 1949. Lattin attended elementary and secondary schools in Houston before graduating from Evan E. Neil Johnson (basketball)
Neil A. Johnson (born April 17, 1943) is a retired American basketball player born in Jackson, Michigan. A 6'7" forward/center from Creighton University, Johnson played four seasons in the National Basketball Association as a member of the New York Knicks (1966–1968) and Phoenix Suns (1968–1970), then spent three seasons (1970–1973) in the American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires. He averaged 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in his professional career and appeared in the 1971 ABA All-Star Game. Known as an "enforcer", Johnson is remembered in the ABA oral history book ''Loose Balls'' for punching Warren Jabali in a game between the Virginia Squires and Denver Rockets. Dennis Hamilton
Dennis Eugene Hamilton (May 8, 1944 – June 18, 2012) was an American basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association and American Basketball Association from 1967 to 1971. Hamilton, a 6'8" forward from Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach, California, played collegiately at the Arizona State University from 1963 to 1966. For his career, he scored 1,079 points (13.6 per game) and shot .813 from the free throw line. He was named second team All-Western Athletic Conference in 1966. Undrafted after the completion of his college career, Hamilton signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 1967–68 NBA season.
