The 1968–69 Kentucky Colonels season was the second season of the Colonels in the American Basketball Association. Penny Ann Early became the first female player in the history of professional basketball, playing very briefly on November 27, 1968. Gene Rhodes
Eugene Stephen Rhodes (September 2, 1927 – March 10, 2018) was an American basketball player and coach. Career Rhodes played college basketball at Western Kentucky University. While Rhodes was a player, WKU won the Ohio Valley Conference championship in 1949, 1950 and 1951, playing in the National Invitational Tournament in each of those seasons. Rhodes played in the NBA for the Indianapolis Olympians. Rhodes was later head basketball coach at St. Xavier High School (Louisville), St. Xavier High School, leading that team to the 1958 Kentucky state championship. In 1964, Rhodes later returned to WKU as an assistant coach under John Oldham (basketball), John Oldham, to 1968. Miami Floridians
The Miami Floridians, later in their history known simply as The Floridians, were a professional basketball franchise in the original, now-defunct American Basketball Association. The Miami Floridians played in the ABA from 1968 through 1970 when they became simply The Floridians. The team had two color schemes: their original red, blue, and white, and their later black, magenta, and orange. The Miami Floridians began as the Minnesota Muskies, a charter ABA franchise who played in Bloomington, Minnesota at the Met Center and wore blue and gold. Sam Smith (basketball, Born 1944)
Samuel Chestley Smith Sr. (January 27, 1943May 18, 2022) was an American professional basketball player who played four seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He played for the Minnesota Muskies, Kentucky Colonels, and Utah Stars from 1967 to 1971. Prior to turning professional, he was noted for being one of the first three African American basketball players at the University of Louisville. He later transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan College and helped the school win its first NCAA Division II championship in 1966. Early life Smith was born in Welch, West Virginia, on January 27, 1943. Eugene Wilbert Moore (born July 29, 1945) is an American former professional basketball player from St. Louis, Missouri. He played college basketball for Saint Louis. A 6'9" center from Saint Louis University, Moore was selected in the second round of the 1968 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and by the Kentucky Colonels in the American Basketball Association draft. Moore played in the American Basketball Association from 1968 through 1970 for the Kentucky Colonels, and spent the 1970–71 season with the Texas Chaparrals. Randolph Mahaffey
Randolph Mahaffey (born September 28, 1945) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'7" forward born in LaGrange, Georgia, Mahaffey played college basketball at Clemson University. Mahaffey was one of four brothers (Don, Ronnie and Richie are the others) who played for Clemson between 1959 and 1970. They marked the first time in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history that four brothers played for the same program. Paul Richard Long (born February 8, 1944) is a former NBA and ABA basketball player. He played professionally for the Detroit Pistons, Kentucky Colonels and the Buffalo Braves. Biography Long was born in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated from Waggener High School in Louisville.
