1968 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 23 March 1968 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The Liberal- Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir David Brand, won a record fourth term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Tonkin. Results Legislative Assembly : 449,122 electors were enrolled to vote at the election, but 14 seats (27.45% of the total) were uncontested—five Liberal seats representing 32,810 enrolled voters, five Country seats representing 29,746 enrolled voters, and four Labor seats representing 26,776 enrolled voters. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. Electoral District Of Kimberley
Kimberley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, located in the state's far north and named after the Kimberley region. The electorate has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments of any seat in the Parliament. The seat has been held by the Labor Party since 1980—inclusive of one term under a Labor Independent (1996–2001), but has become increasingly marginal in recent years. It saw an extremely close and almost unprecedented four-way race at the 2013 state election, with relatively small primary vote margins separating the Labor, Liberal, National and Green candidates in a result that was not known for several days. James Craig (Australian Politician)
James Frederick Craig (22 December 1911 – 12 January 1989) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971, representing the seat of Toodyay. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Craig was born in Kalgoorlie to Hilda Dagma (née Thornton) and James Burnett Craig. He attended Scotch College, Perth, and then found work as a clerk with Western Australian Government Railways, working at Welshpool. Craig enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939, and saw active duty in the Middle Eastern theatre. He initially returned to the railways after being discharged in 1942, and then from 1947 served as secretary and accountant for a cooperative based in the Swan Valley. Ronald Wilfred Kitney (14 July 1918 – 29 March 2011) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1968 to 1971, representing the seat of Blackwood. Kitney was born in Donnybrook, Western Australia, to Clara (née Nicholls) and Frank Sidney Kitney. He left school at the age of 14 to work on his family's orchard in Beelerup. In 1942, Kitney enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. He served with the 35th and 42nd Battalions in the South-West Pacific, reaching the rank of lieutenant by the war's end. Ewart Henry Runciman (15 July 1907 – 14 December 1981) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1962 to 1974, representing the seat of Murray. Runciman was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Agnes Evelyn (née Williamson) and Robert Thomas Ewart Runciman. His family moved to Albany, Western Australia, in 1912, but returned to Scotland in 1915 before going back to Australia in 1919. Runciman attended Scotch College, Perth, and subsequently won a scholarship to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, although he did not pursue a military career. Jack McKay Stewart (15 April 1912 – 5 November 1998) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1968 to 1971, representing the seat of Merredin-Yilgarn. Stewart was born in Perth to Isabella (née Carmichael) and Alexander Stewart. He attended Scotch College, but left school at the age of 15 to help manage the family farm at Bruce Rock. Electoral District Of Merredin-Yilgarn
Merredin was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1950 to 2008. Originally known as Merredin-Yilgarn, the name was shortened in 1977. The district was located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia and was named for the town of Merredin. Merredin was abolished in 2008 as a result of the reduction in rural seats made necessary by the one vote one value reforms. Its former territory was largely incorporated into the new seat of Central Wheatbelt, with parts also added to the districts of Moore and Wagin. At various times, Merredin was held by all three of the major parties. The district was held by the Labor Party for all but three of its first 24 years. Earl Douglas Cash (15 July 1919 – 15 February 2002) was an Australian politician. Life Born in Manitoba, Canada, he migrated to Australia in 1923, where he attended Perth Boys' School and the University of Western Australia. He was a public servant before serving in the military 1940–1946. After the war, he became a businessman. In 1958, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Stirling, defeating sitting Labor member Harry Webb. He was defeated by Webb in 1961. Mirrabooka is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geography The district is based in the northern suburbs of Perth.
