1968 Speedway World Pairs Championship
The 1968 Speedway World Pairs Championship was the unofficial FIM Speedway World Pairs Championship. The final took place in Kempten, West Germany. The championship was won by Sweden (24 points) who beat Great Britain (21 points) and Norway (16 points). Although unofficial at the time it is now regarded as being a major event and is listed in all speedway lists. Speedway World Pairs Championship
The Speedway World Pairs Championship was an annual speedway (motorcycling) event held each year in different countries. The first competition was held in 1968 and the final competition was held in 1993. From 1994 it was merged with the World Team Cup to create the Speedway World Cup, which held its final edition in 2017. The concept of an international pairs championship was reestablished in the form of the Speedway of Nations, which was held for the first time in 2018. Rules The final was competed between seven national teams, and each national team was represented by two riders. Each pairing rode against each other once. The pair with the highest combined score were declared the Champions. From 1991, a third rider could act as reserve. Odd Fossengen
Odd Fossengen (27 February 1945 – 29 December 2017) was a Norway, Norwegian international motorcycle speedway rider. Career Summary Fossengen signed for the Poole Pirates in 1968 following a successful trial with the club and he proved to be a popular signing with the Poole supporters. In 1968 he finished 3rd in the Speedway World Pairs Championship, World Pairs Final with Øyvind S. Berg. His only major honour came in 1969 British Speedway League, 1969, with Poole winning the Speedway British League, British League Championship. In May 1974, Fossengen's speedway career ended after he suffered a badly broken thigh. He was hit by his compatriot Ulf Lovaas' bike while riding for Poole against Oxford Cheetahs, Oxford. He moved back to Oslo in 1974 and worked for a firm selling and repairing hydraulic machinery for 7 years. He then set up his own firm selling and repairing compressed air machinery. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . The 1968 Speedway World Team Cup was the ninth edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final took place at Wembley Stadium in London. The title was won by for the first time by the Great Britain national speedway team. The previous eight editions had all been won by Sweden (five wins) and Poland (three wins). 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 23rd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Ivan Mauger won his first World title. Fellow countryman Barry Briggs finished second and Pole Edward Jancarz took the bronze medal. Format changes The format of the Championship changed again for the 1968 event.
