Bromley London Borough Council
Bromley London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Bromley in Greater London, England. It is one of 32 London borough councils. History There have previously been a number of local authorities responsible for the Bromley area. The current local authority was first elected in 1964, a year before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the London Borough of Bromley on 1 April 1965. Bromley replaced the Municipal Borough of Bromley, the Municipal Borough of Beckenham, Penge Urban District, Orpington Urban District and the Chislehurst part of Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District. It was envisaged that through the London Government Act 1963, Bromley as a London local authority would share power with the Greater London Council. John Grant (British Politician)
John Douglas Grant (16 October 1932 – 29 September 2000) was British politician who served as an MP of the United Kingdom parliament from 1970 to 1983. He was as a member of the Labour Party until he left in 1981 to join the new Social Democratic Party (SDP). He represented Islington East from 1970 to 1974 and Islington Central from 1974 to 1983. Early life Grant was born in Finsbury Park, North London. He attended the Stationers' Company's School in Hornsey before beginning a career as journalist. He worked for several regional newspapers before managing to secure a post at the ''Daily Express'' in 1955 where he covered the trades unions, rising to become the Chief Industrial Correspondent in 1967. Parliamentary career Grant combined his career in journalism with an interest in politics and secured the Labour nomination for the Conservative seat of Beckenham which he lost by 13,000 votes in the 1966 General Election. Michael Neubert
Sir Michael Jon Neubert (3 September 1933 – 3 January 2014) was Conservative MP for Romford from 1974 until 1997. His loss in the landslide 1997 general election was considered something of a surprise. He was educated at Bromley Grammar School and Downing College, Cambridge and worked as a travel and industrial consultant. He was a local councillor and alderman in Bromley 1960–1974 being council leader for a time and Mayor of Bromley in 1972. He contested the parliamentary seat of Hammersmith North in 1966, and Romford in 1970, before being elected in February 1974. From 1983 he held several junior government posts, and was Under-Secretary of State for Defence Procurement at the Ministry of Defence 1989–1990.
