''The Cat'' (French: ''Le Chat'') is a novel by the Belgian writer Georges Simenon, released in 1967. Overview The novel was written, usually for Simenon, within a short period of two weeks between September and October 1966. It was published in France in 1967 by Presses de la Cité, after Simenon had already released around 200 other books. The work bears elements of psychological fiction and black comedy. It tells a story of an elderly married couple in their early 70s, who have been loathing each other for years for killing each other's pets. They have not been talking, their only form of communication being occasional notes on scraps of paper. However, they are soon to understand that they cannot live without each other. The storyline of ''The Cat'' is speculated to have originated from the author's difficult relationship with his mother. Marguerite Lefèvre
Marguerite Alice Lefèvre (1894–1967) was an academic geographer and the first woman to hold a professorship at the Catholic University of Leuven. A prize at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and a street in Leuven are named in her honour. Life Lefèvre was born in Steenokkerzeel on 1 March 1894, the daughter of Théophile Lefèvre and Elisabeth Verhulst.R. Ilse Uyttersprot (10 May 1967 – 4 August 2020) was a Belgian Christian Democrat politician who served as a CD&V member of the Chamber of Representatives for East Flanders. Born in Dendermonde, she was the daughter of Raymond Uyttersprot, former mayor of Moorsel. She was a Chamber member from 2007 to 2010. From 2007 to 2013, she was mayor of Aalst, Belgium. Luc de Heusch (7 May 1927 – 7 August 2012) was a Belgian filmmaker, writer, and anthropologist, professor emeritus at the Free University of Brussels. His 1967 film ''Thursday We Shall Sing Like Sunday'' was entered into the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. Life Luc de Heusch began his career in film in 1947 as assistant to Henri Storck. From 1949 to 1951 he lived in an artists' commune, the Ateliers du Marais. In 1951, under the pseudonym Luc Zangrie, he directed ''Perséphone'', the only film produced by the CoBrA artistic movement. In 1953 and 1954 he carried out anthropological fieldwork in the Belgian Congo. Like Henri Storck and Charles Dekeukeleire, he also made documentary films about the Congo. Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (; 13 February 1903 – 4 September 1989) was a Belgian writer. He published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, and was the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret. Early life and education Simenon was born at 26 (now number 24) to Désiré Simenon and his wife Henriette Brüll. Désiré Simenon worked in an accounting office at an insurance company and had married Henriette in April 1902.
